No trip to Queenstown is complete without a day trip to Glenorchy, Wanaka or Central Otago. All of these beautiful locations are within easy driving distance of Queenstown and offer another insight into New Zealand’s magnificent landscape.

Glenorchy – this drive is breathtaking as it goes all along the Lake Wakatipu and takes only 45 minutes. However, plan a few stops so that you can take pictures and enjoy the beautiful mountains. If the scenery looks familiar, you’re probably right as many of Glenorchy’s landscapes featured in The Lord of the Rings films.

Central Otago – driving out from Queenstown you’ll pass through the Gibbston Valley, make a stop at Peregrine which is one of Gibbston’s top wineries, producing excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and, of course, Pinot Noir.  Next travel on to the towns of Bannockburn, Cromwell and a little further out Alexandra and Clyde.  There are more than 80 wineries in the area and many dining options. Central Otago is also renowned for summer fruit, including cherries and apricots.

Wanaka – your first stop is historic Arrowtown which is only 15 minutes from Queenstown CBD. This charming town was built at the height of the gold rush and has many restored cottages and beautiful tree-lined streets. Another 45 minutes-drive and you will arrive at the delightful lakeside town of Wanaka. This is nature at her best and offers some of the South Island’s most beautiful surroundings. Wanaka’s also a handy base if you plan on hiking or climbing in Mt Aspiring National Park.
