About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria and known as the cultural mixing pot of Australia. As of June 2011, the greater geographical area of Melbourne was home to a population of over 4.1 million, making it the second-most populated city in Australia. The city is located on Port Phillip bay; at the northernmost point of which is the estuary to the famous Yarra River.

Melbourne was founded in 1835 by settlers from nearby Launceston and was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847. During the gold rush of the 1850s, Melbourne was transformed into one of the world’s largest and wealthiest cities. It also served as the interim seat of government of the newly created nation of Australia from 1901 until 1927.

Home of institutions such as Australian film and Australian television, Melbourne is often referred to as the “cultural capital of Australia”. It is also a major centre for contemporary music and dance. Melbourne was the birthplace of the impressionist art movement and Australian dance styles such as New Vogue and the Melbourne Shuffle. In 2011, Melbourne was ranked as the world’s most liveable city.

About Melbourne Airport:

The main airport serving the city is Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport. Avalon Airport is currently Melbourne’s second international airport. Tullamarine was opened in 1970 to replace the nearby Essendon Airport and has since become the second busiest airport in Australia.

The airport is located in the suburb of Tullamarine and is a 30 minute drive from the city centre. It comprises four terminals: one international, two domestic and one budget domestic terminal.

The airport features direct flights to 33 destinations in all states and territories, as well as numerous destinations in Oceania, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. In fact; the Melbourne—Sydney route is the fifth most-travelled passenger air route in the world.

Tullamarine airport is the major hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia, while Jetstar Airways and Tiger Airways Australia use the airport as their home base.
