Terminology Key.

Let us break down our package terms so you know exactly what may appear on your invoice:

*Damage liability excess: ‘Amount reduced by’ is dependent on the vehicle type and hire itinerary selected.

**Km allowance (mine spec vehicles): Up to 140 km free per day, $0.30 per excess kilometre + GST (Regional WA, SA, NT). Up to 140 km free per day, $0.30 per excess kilometre + GST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS).

***Contract fee: We have a small surcharge to cover our costs to draw up our rental agreement with you.

****Premium location fee:  Sometimes a premium airport or downtown location will charge us an additional surcharge for each rental, and we are upfront about this cost in your package! The price will depend on the location selected.

*****Registration recovery fee: We pay a surcharge to cover our vehicle registration and compulsory third-party insurance costs, and we highlight this clearly in your package breakdown. At Redspot, we believe in straight-up honesty. Just so you’re in the loop, all the nitty-gritty on damage liability and extra charges can be found in our terms and conditions.

Redspot Driver Facts.

Share the ride with additional drivers:

We can easily add additional drivers to your car rental booking. The driver will need to show their full valid driver’s licence in any branch and provide a credit card for a daily surcharge. Too easy!

Rev-Up for Young Drivers:

We are one of the few car rental companies to have a minimum driver age of 21!
Note that drivers under 25 will pay a daily surcharge on their car rental fee. Car hire is limited to small to medium-sized sedans and hatchbacks.

Don’t sweat the paperwork:

If you are a first-time renter, all we need is one (1) document with your address on it. Returning customers, all you need to bring for collection is your valid driver’s licence and credit card. If it’s your first time renting locally, you’ll also need to bring a third form of identification like a current utility bill. We will take care of the rest!

Overseas visitors welcome:

Explore every Aussie hotspot with Redspot! Temporary overseas visitors can hire a car with:

  • A full valid driver’s licence and passport
  • Licences must have photo identification
  • If the licence is not in English then you will need an official translated document from your embassy or road traffic authority in your home country
  • Some countries may need to apply for an international driver’s permit

Family-friendly car hire:

Redspot is a family-run business and selects modern SUVs, sedans and people carriers for family comfort. With a range of baby, child and booster seats available to hire, the little ones don’t miss out.

Credit Card Condition:

Cover your back and ours. All rental cars require a credit card at pick-up for a pre-authorisation.

Fuel Flexibility:

Pre-pay, post-pay or refuel your rental car yourself. Redspot makes it easy to keep a full tank for an Australian adventure.

Local P-Platers and Full Licences:

Redspot Car Rentals gives P-platers the green light – one of the few Aussie companies that do! Our safety rules include:

  • You must hold a Provisional P2 driver’s licence (green Ps).
  • Your full driver’s licence must be valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of rental collection.

Maximum age is no barrier:

With Redspot, age is just a number! There is no maximum age to hit the road.

Toll-road Tricks:

Buy peace of mind with a Redspot toll road waiver and say goodbye to unexpected charges.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you need a car in Coober Pedy?

If you plan to visit all of Coober Pedy’s attractions and the epic Aussie outback beyond, hiring a car is your best bet. There aren’t any shuttle bus services running from the airport to town, and no taxi services in Coober Pedy either.

Hop into a rental car straight from Coober Pedy Airport for maximum convenience. Discover the opal mines, the Kanku-Breakaways lunar landscape and more on your own schedule with a trusty set of wheels!

Do you need a 4WD for Coober Pedy?

No 4WDs necessary if you’re heading to Coober Pedy; all the roads leading into town are sealed. That said, hiring a 4WD may be better if you want to explore nearby attractions surrounded by unsealed roads, like the epic Kanku-Breakaways.

Weather conditions heavily impact the road to the Kanku-Breakaways, and at times, access will be recommended for 4WD vehicles only or completely closed for safety reasons. Always check the local road conditions before buckling in – this will help you decide whether to go 2WD or 4WD in Coober Pedy and beyond.

What is the oldest age to hire a car?

None! At Redspot, we say that age is just a number. That’s why we welcome anyone over 21 years old to rent with us, and get your business in motion.

Can you rent a car on your P’s Australia?

You sure can! We’re one of the few Aussie companies that give the green light for local P-platers over 21 to rent a car. Commercial and mine spec rental vehicles are included.

Keeping you safe is our top priority, so we have a few safety rules that are designed to make sure you get from Point A to Point B without a hitch.

If you are a P-plater, you must:

  • Hold a Provisional P2 licence (green Ps).
  • Hold a driver’s licence that is valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of rental collection.

When you rent a car, remember to factor in the daily young driver surcharge. This surcharge applies to all drivers holding an Australian provisional driver’s licence.

Note: Standard vehicle class restrictions for young drivers do not apply for commercial and mine-spec rentals.

Red-hot Coober Pedy tips from our local staff!

Underground Isn’t Just for Tourists – It’s for Surviving Summer
Coober Pedy gets HOT – like melt-your-thongs-on-the-footpath hot. Most of the locals live underground for a reason. Do yourself a favour and book an underground hotel. You’ll sleep like a wombat.”

Desert Driving? Tell Us Where You’re Headed – Seriously
“Heading to William Creek, Oodnadatta, or off the sealed roads? Let us know upfront so we can get you in a vehicle that’s up for the task – not everything in our fleet is built for the bush.

– Mira, Bookings Lead & Outback Planner

Fuel Stops Are Hours Apart – Fill Up Even If You’re Half Full
“Out here, “running low” means “stranded”. Don’t risk it – top up when you can, not when you feel like it. There are long, empty stretches with nothing but red dirt and regret.”

– Dean, Returns Team & Long-Range Fuel Advocate

Want a Killer Sunset Photo? Kanku-Breakaways at Golden Hour
“Just 30km north of town, the Breakaways are absolutely magic at sunset. Bring water, a camera, and watch the colours change minute by minute. Bonus tip: bring fly repellent. You’ll thank us.

– Stacey, Customer Service & Sunset Scout

Opal Mining Tours Are Legit – And Half the Town Is Involved
“Skip the brochure fluff – a real opal mine tour is a must. Ask locals where to go, and you might end up seeing actual working shafts and meeting the characters who dig them. Weird? A bit. Worth it? Absolutely.”

– Russ, Fleet Prep & Former Noodler

Going Off the Grid? Bring Water – Then Double It
“Planning to drive anywhere outside of town? Pack more water than you think you’ll need. If you break down, help could be hours away – and mobile signal? Yeah, good luck with that.

Tracey, Admin Team & Desert Safety Boss

Returning Your Vehicle? Fuel Up in Town – It’s Your Only Chance
“There’s no servo at the airport, so make sure you fuel up in Coober Pedy township before drop-off. Last thing you want is to turn up empty and realise you’ve got a 10km loop in 42°C heat.”

– Jono, Yard Crew & Last-Stop Fuel Guy
