What to know before you hire a truck in Melbourne
Our truck hires can give you everything you need to get your job done by yourself. Take the wheel with our top tips:

Bring your driver’s licence
You only need a standard car licence for our truck hire, but we will need to see the physical licence in the branch at pick-up. If you need additional drivers, then bring along their driver’s licence to add to the booking. Simple!

Remember your credit card
All vehicles require a credit card for a pre-authorisation check.

Consider truck size
Keep in mind that even smaller trucks are taller than standard car hires. For our larger box trucks, high-wind areas can affect you more than usual. Drive slower to keep you and your belongings safe on the road!

Check your fuel policy
Understand the fuel policy (whether it’s full-to-full or pre-paid) so you can transport your cargo while keeping your budget under control.

Inspect the truck
Our trucks are regularly serviced and cleaned. However, you should always check the inside of your truck to ensure everything is as expected before you set off to your “big” task.

Plan your route
It’s crucial to remember that trucks are larger than regular cars and may not fit in all spaces, especially in Melbourne’s narrow carparks. Be sure to plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions, and avoid tight spots or low clearances.

Toll policy
You’ll find many cashless toll roads across Australia, including at least 3 in Victoria At Redspot, we use our own toll tag. If you choose to bring your own device, you may risk being charged twice. When you collect your vehicle, you can choose to pre-pay your toll charges by purchasing a toll waiver.

Melbourne truck hire FAQs
How much does it cost to hire a truck in Melbourne?
The cost of hiring a truck in Melbourne can vary depending on your vehicle model, rental period duration, one-way hire and kilometres you drive. Just enter your details into Redspot’s booking tool to get a cost estimate for your trip.
What should I know if it’s my first time driving a truck?
First time driving a moving truck? No worries! Here are a few tips and tricks to get you on the road with confidence:
- Give a wide berth: Make sure to exercise extra caution when driving near other vehicles. Give yourself a wide berth to give all drivers (including you!) more time to react when turning or braking. Slow down and keep your eyes on the road, especially in high traffic areas.
- Secure your load: Ensure your cargo is properly secured and fastened in place to keep fragile belongings from shifting or breaking during transit. Check out our moving accessories, including rental ropes, straps, and ratchets to keep your belongings safe and sound!
- Make sure to signal: As a heavy vehicle, signalling is the best way to let your fellow drivers know your intentions and allow for adequate reaction time. This helps to prevent accidents and allows for a smoother ride.
- Be mindful of your vehicle size and weight: In a moving truck, you will be larger than many other vehicles on the road. Try to rely on your handbrake more than the pedal brake for more gradual and controlled stops, so you can drive more safely, even with a heavy load.
- Keep navigation hands-free: Most Redspot cars have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, so you can enjoy hands-free navigation that helps keep you safe while driving.
- Take plenty of breaks: As a new truck driver, it’s important to stay alert yet relaxed. Be sure to take plenty of rest breaks if you feel exhausted or uncomfortable on the road.
Mind those inclines: Take it easy on those steep inclines or declines, especially in wet weather. Large trucks can tip over more easily than smaller, lighter vehicles, so be sure to slow down near steep or tight roads.
How do I operate a truck tailgate?
To operate your rental trucks’ tailgate, you need to:
- Park on a flat surface
- Switch the engine to “on” or “accessory”
- Open the rear roller doors
- Release the safety latch on the tailgate
- Locate the tailgate control panel and turn it to “on”:
- Press “down” on the control panel until it is sitting just above the ground
One of our friendly Melbourne team members will be able to show you how to operate the tailgate at pick up.
Can you hire a truck to go one way?
With Redspot, yes, you can! With our flexible one-way rental packages, you can pick up your hire truck in one location and drop it off in another without stressing about the return trip.
Please keep in mind that one-way rentals typically include a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be displayed to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.
How can I secure the item I’m transporting?
Our truck rentals include internal tie downs so you can secure your items before driving away. If you are moving house or have extra bulky items, you can hire moving accessories like ratchet straps to secure your load even further.
Can I rent a truck with a normal license?
Yes, you only need a standard car licence to hire a truck with Redspot. Rest assured, you do not need a heavy vehicle license.
What is the oldest age to drive a rental truck in Australia?
At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! That’s why we welcome senior drivers to rent a truck with us and gear up for any big job. Just bring your valid standard car licence to pick up the keys.
Can Redspot trucks move interstate?
Yes, depending on your location and plans! If you return your Redspot truck to the same location you picked it up from, you’re free to roam the interstate with ease.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way truck hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory you rented it from.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or online form to discuss your truck hire options. We’d love to help you navigate your journey!
Are there any height restriction tunnels to avoid in Melbourne?
In general, Melbourne tunnels have a height restriction of 4.3 meters. Our box truck hires are around 3.2m in height, and the exact measurements are always confirmed at pickup.
There will be an advanced warning sign for any tunnels with a low clearance, so you will be able to assess and detour if necessary.
Do Redspot moving trucks have unlimited kms?
At Redspot, we do impose a 130km p/day limit on vans, trucks, and utes in Melbourne to help us sustain the fleet. Otherwise, our standard car hires come with unlimited kilometres. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.
For more info, please get in touch with our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.
Is roadside assistance included for truck hires?
24/7 standard roadside assistance is included in the truck hire rental price, so you are never alone during unexpected mechanical breakdowns. You can upgrade to premium roadside assistance for a fee per day to cover you for car tyres, key lockouts, and some accommodation costs.
Are there any restrictions on what can be transported?
In general, you can transport many household items or bulky materials, but they must easily fit into the box truck compartment to securely close and lock the roller door. Our box truck hires cannot transport:
- Loads exceeding the weight limits
- Flammable goods
- Firearms or explosives
