Driving on toll roads?
No problem! Your Redspot rental vehicle can be used on all Australian toll roads.
Australia’s toll roads are fully electronic, meaning there are no cash booths. If you travel on a toll road, the toll operator will notify us after your journey and we’ll process the charge to the payment card linked to your rental.
What will I be charged?
If you use a toll road, you’ll be charged:
- The actual toll charged by the toll road operator; plus
- A Redspot administration fee of A$3.36 (including GST) per toll transaction.
Because toll operators don’t always send us the information immediately, toll charges may appear on your account up to one month or more after your rental has ended.
Can I use my own toll account or e-tag?
Yes, you can use your own toll device or account. However, because toll roads identify vehicles by both the e-tag and the vehicle registration, there’s a possibility that both your account and Redspot may receive the toll notification, resulting in duplicate charges.
To avoid this, we recommend checking with your toll provider before your trip to ensure your device is correctly linked to your rental vehicle.
Want extra peace of mind?
At selected locations, you can purchase a Toll Pass Waiver when booking or collecting your vehicle. This option allows eligible toll charges to be covered under the applicable terms and conditions. Pricing varies depending on your pickup location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I avoid toll roads?
Yes. Most GPS and map applications (such as Google Maps or Apple Maps) allow you to select “Avoid Toll Roads” when planning your journey.
How do I know if I’ve used a toll road?
If you drive through an electronic toll point, the toll operator will record your vehicle registration and notify Redspot after your rental.
Why was I charged after returning my vehicle?
Toll operators often send toll information days or weeks after travel, so it’s normal for toll charges to appear after your rental has ended.
Which Australian cities have toll roads?
Toll roads are most common in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Can I bring my own toll road tag?
Yes. You are welcome to use your own electronic toll tag (such as an e-tag or toll pass) during your rental.
Before travelling, we recommend contacting your toll provider to temporarily add your Redspot rental vehicle’s registration to your account. This helps ensure tolls are charged directly to your toll account.
Please note that if your toll provider doesn’t correctly recognise the rental vehicle, or if both your toll tag and the vehicle registration are detected, duplicate toll charges may occur. Redspot cannot prevent or refund duplicate charges made by third-party toll operators or toll account providers.
If you prefer not to use your own toll tag, simply drive as normal. Any tolls incurred will be charged to the payment method linked to your rental, together with the applicable Redspot administration fee.
