What to know before you hire a truck in Adelaide
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are plenty of things to consider when hiring a truck. Here are some handy tips to get your stuff where you need it:

Bring your driver’s licence
Please bring your physical drivers license and credit card to book your next truck hire. Our rental vehicles need a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. If you are planning on any additional drivers, that’s no problem. Just make sure they bring their licences with them, so you can share the trucking suits without any problems.

Remember your credit card
All vehicles require a credit card for a pre-authorisation check.

Consider truck size
Keep in mind that even smaller trucks are taller than standard car hires. Trucks are more affected by high winds than cars. Drive slower to keep you and your belongings safe on the road!

Check your fuel policy
Understand the fuel policy (whether it’s full-to-full or pre-paid) so you can transport your cargo while keeping your budget under control.

Inspect the truck
When you pick your truck up, be sure to thoroughly inspect it. You may also want to take pictures of any bumps or scrapes. This helps you avoid potential charges later down the road, and lets our team know about any issues.

Plan your route
It’s important to remember that your truck is larger than a regular vehicle and may not fit all spaces. Plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions and avoid tight spots or low clearance roads in Adelaide.

Toll policy
You’ll find many cashless toll roads across Australia, however, there are none in South Australia. If you are travelling across states, please remember that Redspot uses our own toll tag. If you choose to bring your own device, you may risk being charged twice. When you collect your vehicle, you can choose to pre-pay your toll charges by purchasing a toll waiver.

Adelaide truck hire FAQs
How much to hire a truck in Adelaide?
The cost of hiring a truck in Adelaide can change depending on factors like vehicle model, how long you’re renting for, how busy it is, and mileage.
Just enter your details into Redspot’s handy booking tool to get a cost estimate for your trip.
What should I know if it’s my first time driving a truck?
First time driving a moving truck? No worries! Here are a few tips and tricks to get you on the road with confidence:
- Give a wide berth: Make sure to exercise extra caution when driving near other vehicles. Give yourself a wide berth to give all drivers (including you!) more time to react when turning or braking. Slow down and keep your eyes on the road, especially in high traffic areas.
- Secure your load: Ensure your cargo is properly secured and fastened in place to keep fragile belongings from shifting or breaking during transit. Check out our moving accessories, including rental ropes, straps and ratchets to keep your things safe and sound!
- Make sure to signal: As a heavy vehicle, signalling is the best way to let your fellow drivers know your intentions and allow for adequate reaction time. This helps to prevent accidents and allows for a smoother ride.
- Be mindful of your vehicle size and weight: In a moving truck, you will be larger than many other vehicles on the road. Try to rely on your handbrake more than the pedal brake for more gradual and controlled stops, so you can drive more safely, even with a heavy load.
- Keep navigation hands-free: Most Redspot cars have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, so you can enjoy hands-free navigation that helps keep you safe while driving.
- Take plenty of breaks: As a new truck driver, it’s important to stay alert yet relaxed. Be sure to take plenty of rest breaks if feeling exhausted or uncomfortable on the road!
- Mind those inclines: Take it easy on roads with steep inclines or declines, especially in wet weather. Large trucks can tip over more easily than smaller, lighter vehicles, so be sure to slow down near steep or tight roads.
How do I operate a truck tailgate?
To operate your rental truck’s tailgate, you need to:
- Unlock the vehicle: Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and switched on before operating the tailgate.
- Find the release button: Locate the tailgate release button. It may be on the keyfob, inside the vehicle or on the side of the tailgate itself.
- Open the tailgate: Lift the tailgate up and out to open it. If the truck has a power tailgate, the release button may also have a lift button.
- Loading: Be sure to position the tailgate on a stable, level surface that is clear of obstacles.
- Close the tailgate: Using the release controls, lift the tailgate and ensure that it latches. With a power tailgate, you may need to stow it back into position.
Need a bit more guidance? Just ask our friendly staff how to operate your tailgate when you pick up your vehicle, and they’ll be more than happy to help you.
Can you hire a truck to go one way?
With Redspot, yes, you can! With our flexible one-way rental packages, you can pick up your hire truck in one location and drop it off in another without stressing about the return trip. For instance, you could rent a truck from our Beverley branch and drop it off with our Lidcombe team once you’ve finished.
Please keep in mind that one-way rentals usually come with a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be shown to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.
How can I secure the item I’m transporting?
When you’re packing your vehicle, be sure that all items are safely wrapped and packaged. When packing into the truck, be sure you use the ratchet straps, buckle straps and cargo net to secure your load to the truck bed.
Pack each item tightly to minimise movement, and place the heavier items against the truck’s walls. If possible, use a friction mat to further enhance stability and prevent sliding.
What is the oldest age to drive a rental truck in Australia?
At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! We say that age is just a number. That’s why we allow senior drivers to rent a truck with us, to make moving or transporting cargo easier.
Can I rent a truck with a normal licence?
Yes, at Redspot, you can rent our 3.5 tonne trucks with a normal licence without any issues. To hire a Truck in Australia (including our Beverley branch), you will need:
- A valid credit card or debit card* or purchase order/prepaid voucher**.
- A valid driver’s licence and the licence of any other drivers using the car. Licence not in English? Please present an official translation from your embassy or home nation’s traffic authority.
- Does your licence show your current address? If not, please provide documented proof of address, such as a utility bill.
- If you are not an Australian citizen, you must provide your passport.
*Debit cards: Must have the customer’s name displayed, and the ability to make online payments e.g. Visa or Mastercard debit cards.
**Purchase order or prepaid vouchers: Customers must also supply a valid credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card for any incidental expenses (extensions, fuel charges, etc.).
Can Redspot trucks move interstate?
Yes, depending on your location and plans! If you return your Redspot truck to the same location you picked it up from, you’re free to roam the interstate with ease.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way truck hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory it is rented from.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or use our online form to discuss your truck hire options. We’d love to help you navigate your journey!
Are there any height restriction tunnels to avoid in Adelaide?
Yes, as our hired trucks are more than 5.3 metres in height, you should avoid driving the Heysen Tunnels on the South Eastern Freeway.
Do Redspot moving trucks have unlimited kms?
While most standard hire cars come with unlimited kms, at Redspot, we do impose a 130km p/day limit on vans, trucks and utes in Adelaide to help us sustain the fleet. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.
For more info, please contact our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.
What are the excess km charges?
With Redspot, you get 130 km free per day. Any further travel may result in excess km charges, for $0.30 per excess kilometres + GST.
