Young? Provisional? No Problem. You Can Still Rent with Redspot.
Trying to hire a car under 25? Been knocked back at the rental desk because you’re still on your Ps?
We get it. It’s tough being a younger driver in a rental world built for suit-and-tie business travellers. But at Redspot, we’re doing things differently.
Whether you’re 21 and on a provisional licence, or 24 and planning your first big road trip, we say yes (where most others say no).
Here’s how it works — and what you need to know before booking.
Who Can Rent? The Short Version
✅ You’re at least 21 years old
✅ You’ve held a valid driver’s licence for at least 12 months
✅ Your licence (P plate or full) is in English or you have an official translation
✅ You meet our standard ID and payment requirements
Yep – we rent to provisional drivers as long as you’ve had your licence for a full year. No L-platers, sorry.
Are There Any Extra Conditions for Younger Drivers?
Yes – but nothing outrageous.
Young Driver Surcharge
A daily surcharge applies to drivers aged 21 to 24. This helps cover additional insurance risk and admin costs.
We keep it clear and upfront in your quote — no nasty surprises at the counter.
Vehicle Restrictions
You can rent most cars in our fleet, including:
Some larger or premium vehicles (like 8-seaters, luxury models, and specialty 4WDs) may be off-limits to drivers under 25. But if you’re unsure — just ask.
Hot Tip: Our Executive Package is popular with younger renters. It includes $0 damage liability, so you’re covered without the stress.
What You’ll Need at Pickup
When you arrive to collect your Redspot rental, bring:
1) Your licence (provisional or full)
2) Credit card in your name
3) If your licence isn’t in English: a certified translation or International Driving Permit
We’ll go over the vehicle condition report with you, explain your coverage, and get you on the road — fast.
Where Can You Drive?
Our under-25 and provisional renters can travel just about anywhere in Australia — as long as you:
- Stick to sealed roads (unless renting a 4WD where allowed)
- Avoid unauthorised zones (like off-road tracks or beach driving)
- Comply with local laws for P platers (e.g. zero BAC, no high-powered vehicles)

Why Redspot Welcomes Young Drivers
We’ve been in the car rental game long enough to know that age isn’t everything. What matters is responsibility behind the wheel — and that comes with time, not just a number.
We also know:
- Students and working travellers need wheels
- Young families still need holidays
- Backpackers and road trippers want flexibility
- Not everyone gets their licence at 18
So we built our policy to reflect real life — not outdated restrictions.
Popular Trips for Younger Renters
Need inspo? These are some of the most popular drives for our under-25 customers:
- Brisbane to Byron Bay (via the Gold Coast)
- Melbourne to the Grampians
- Cairns to Mission Beach
- Sydney to Jervis Bay
- Darwin to Litchfield National Park
And yep, you can stop for a surf, a servo pie, or a selfie with the Big Banana — we’re not judging.
FAQs – Quickfire Answers
Can I add a second driver who’s also under 25?
Yes – same rules apply: must be over 21, licence held for 12 months, surcharge applies.
What happens if I’m 24 now, but turn 25 during the rental?
You’ll still be charged the young driver fee for the full rental period.
Do Ps from overseas count?
Yes, as long as they’re equivalent to an Australian provisional licence, and you’ve held it for 12 months.
What if I’ve had my licence 10 months?
Sorry – come back in 2 months. We strictly require 12 months minimum.
Wrap-Up: You’re Welcome Here
At Redspot, we don’t believe in shutting out younger drivers with blanket bans or hidden fees.
So whether you’re hiring a car for:
- A festival weekend
- A uni break escape
- A work trip
- A family visit
- Or just a good old-fashioned Aussie road trip…
We’re here to help you make it happen — licence plate and all.
