What to know before you hire a Ute in Darwin
If you’re getting behind the wheel of a ute for the first time, it might feel a bit intimidating, especially if you’re used to driving a small hatchback. No need to stress though. Utes can be driven with a standard driver’s licence, and it just takes a few small adjustments to drive one safely:

Give yourself more room
Utes are generally longer than regular cars, so allow extra space when turning, changing lanes, or parking.

Watch those blind spots
Before heading off, make sure your mirrors are properly adjusted. Always do a head check before merging or changing lanes, as utes can have larger blind spots than smaller vehicles.

Fuel supply
If you are heading into rural Northern outback territory, be sure to check where yoyu can refuel and which stops are open. That way, you can make sure you aren’t stranded if you run out.

Get comfortable first
A ute can sit higher off the ground and feel bulkier than what you might be used to. The dashboard layout may also be different to what you’re used to. Take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the setup before taking off.

Don’t forget your licence
You’ll need to show a valid driver’s licence and a credit card when picking up your ute. Planning on sharing the drive? Make sure any additional drivers bring their valid licences as well. A credit card is required for the standard pre-authorisation on all rentals.

Do a quick inspection
When you collect your ute, give it a thorough once-over and let our friendly staff know if you spot anything unusual. This helps avoid any issues down the track and ensures you’re hitting the road with peace of mind.

Toll info
Our vehicles come fitted with Redspot’s own toll tag. If you use your personal toll device, you might end up being charged twice. To keep things simple, you can opt to pre-pay tolls with a toll waiver at the time of pickup.

What do people use utes for?
Due to their versatility, cargo space and towing capacity, people use utes for the following reasons:
- Carrying heavy loads: Utes are designed to handle large, heavy loads, making them a must-use vehicle for tradespeople in construction, farming, and other fields that need a reliable hauling tool.
- Transporting equipment: From timber to pipes, the open tray of a ute is perfect for carrying bulky equipment more securely and safely than a standard vehicle.
- Towing: Due to a robust build, utes are capable of hauling heavy loads, making them ideal for moving trailers, boats, caravans or camping gear.
- Moving homes: An open tray gives homeowners a large space they can use to move items without worrying about damaging the interior of their family car. A ute also has more cargo space for furniture and other items than a typical sedan.
What’s the difference between a pickup and a ute?
Typically, a ute is a smaller vehicle with a chassis based on a standard car design with smaller interior storage. Comparatively, a pickup truck is larger, has a chassis based on a truck design and has more interior space and cargo capacity.
