What to know before you hire a Ute in Perth
Driving a ute for the first time can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to zipping around in a compact car. Don’t stress, you can drive a ute with a standard driver’s licence and only need to make a few safe adjustments:

Give yourself extra space
A ute is generally longer than any standard car, so give yourself extra space when turning corners, switching lanes or parking.

Be aware of blind spots
Adjust your mirrors before setting off and always do an extra check before changing lanes or merging.

Get familiar
A ute may feel really high and bulky compared to other vehicles, and the dashboard may be set out differently. Spend a little time getting comfortable before releasing that handbrake.

Bring your driver’s licence
Bring a valid driver’s licence and a credit card to book your next ute hire. All rental vehicles require a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. Planning on additional drivers? Bring their valid driver’s licences too, so you can share ute-ing duties without any problems.

Inspect the ute
During vehicle pickup, make sure to thoroughly inspect your rental ute and let our friendly team know about any issues. This helps you avoid potential charges later, and gets you on the road with a top-notch vehicle and a confident mind.

Plan your route
It’s crucial to remember that utes are larger than regular cars and may not fit in all spaces, especially in Sydney. Be sure to plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions, and avoid tight spots or low clearances.

Toll Policy
At Redspot, we use our own toll tag. If you choose to bring your own device, you may risk being charged twice. When you collect your vehicle, you can choose to pre-pay your toll charges by purchasing a toll waiver.

Perth ute hire FAQs
How much to hire a ute in Perth?
The exact cost of a ute hire in Perth can vary depending on the season, the vehicle you are renting and how long your rental period is. At Redspot, we’ll make sure to give you a comprehensive overview of your costs when you make a booking. No hidden fees. Just keys, wheels and the open road. You can rely on Redspot.
Do I need a specific driver’s licence to hire a ute?
No, you can hire any ute with a full, valid driver’s licence without any issues. To hire a ute in Perth, you will need:
- A valid credit card or debit card* or purchase order/prepaid voucher**.
- A valid driver’s licence and the licence of any other drivers using the car. Licence not in English? Please present an official translation from your embassy or your home nation’s traffic authority.
- If your licence does not show your current address, please provide documented proof of address, such as a utility bill.
- If you are not an Australian citizen, you must provide your passport.
Unfortunately, you cannot hire a ute with a P-Plate licence.
Debit cards: Must have the customer’s name displayed, and the ability to make online payments, e.g. Visa or Mastercard debit cards.
What are the common uses for ute hire?
Utes have an extremely versatile towing capacity and cargo space, making them great for the following uses:
- Load carrying: Utes are designed to handle heavy loads, making them a fantastic tool for tradespeople in construction, farming and other fields that need reliable hauling.
- Equipment transport: Thanks to the open tray, a ute is a great vehicle for transporting heavy tools and equipment, including timber and pipes.
- Towing: Due to their robust build, utes are suitable for hauling heavy loads like trailers, boats, caravans and camping gear.
- Moving houses: With a hired ute, homeowners have a reliable way to move their household items without having to hire a moving company. A ute also has more cargo space for appliances and other household items than a sedan.
What’s the difference between a pickup and a ute?
Usually, a ute is a smaller vehicle than a pickup with a chassis similar to a standard car design, with only two passengers. Comparatively, a pickup truck is bigger, has a chassis similar to a truck and can carry more passengers with more interior space.
What is the age requirement to hire a ute with Redspot?
You must be 25 years and over to hire a ute in Perth. Unfortunately, young drivers between 21 and 25 can only hire small and standard car rentals.
Can you hire a ute to go one way?
Yes, one-way ute hire is available from many of our branches across Australia! However, not all branches will have a ute available in their fleet, so one-way hires may only be available from specific locations. Unfortunately currently oneway rentals out of Perth to other states is restricted.
Please be advised that one-way rentals typically come with a drop fee (aka a one-way fee) to cover the cost of moving the vehicle back to its initial location. This fee will be shown to you during your booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day one.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way ute hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or use our online form to discuss your ute hire options. We’d love to help you navigate your journey!
