What to know before you book a ute hire
Whether you’re a regular ute driver or it’s your first time, there are a few details to remember to ensure an easier experience. Here are some handy tips to make your next ute rental stress-free:

Bring the essentials
To book a tradie ute, you will need to bring a valid driver’s licence and a debit or credit card for pre-authorisation at pick-up. If you’d like to include other drivers, they will also need to bring their licenses, then you can share the driving load together.

Age requirements
So long as you’re older than 21 and a provisional driver, you’re all set to hire with Redspot!

License type
You can drive our utes on a standard class-C car license. No special requirements necessary!

Consider your load size
Our utes come with different tray sizes. Be sure to think of how much space you’ll need on your job. You should also check that your ute can handle the weight and dimensions of your cargo.

Rental costs
Calculate costs based on how long you’ll need the ute and factor in additional services like one-way rentals, which may involve extra fees.

Accessories
To make moving cargo even easier, ask about Redspot’s range of moving accessories, such as ropes and tarps. Keeping your load secure means less stress and a safer trip, and you don’t have to worry about what to do with the gear when you’re done!

Ute handling
Even if you’re a seasoned veteran, you should remember that utes drive differently from regular cars! Watch out for height restrictions and windy areas where the open tray might affect your load.

Tradie Ute Hire FAQs
How much does a tradie ute hire cost?
The exact cost of hiring a Tradie ute may vary depending on your hired ute’s model, availability, rental duration, and mileage. Check out our handy booking tool to get a cost estimate for your rental period.
Can Redspot utes move interstate?
Yes, depending on your location and plans! So long as you return your Redspot ute to the same branch you picked it up from, you’re free to go across states as you please. Depending on availability, you can also use our one-way program to drop off your vehicle at a different branch:
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way ute hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (Such as in NT, SA, WA), one-way ute hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented from.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or fill out the online form to chat about your tradie ute hire options. We’re here to help you move, safe and sound.
Who can hire a tradie ute?
Any sole trader, corporate worker or other professional can hire a tradie ute as long as they hold a valid driver’s license. Depending on your company agreement, you may also need to present a valid credit card.
Do Redspot utes have unlimited kms?
While most standard hire cars come with unlimited kms, at Redspot, we do impose a km p/day limit on certain vehicles, including utes, to help us sustain the fleet. The exact km limit will change depending on location. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.
For more info, please contact our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.
Is it legal to drive a ute without a tray?
Yes, you can legally drive a ute without a tray, but you must make sure the vehicle still complies with road safety regulations for lighting, plate number visibility, and vehicle width. You must also make sure your load is secured and can’t fall off or make your ute unstable.
What does GVM stand for?
GVM stands for Gross Vehicle Mass, and it refers to the maximum weight a vehicle is allowed to be when it is fully loaded. At Redspot, our utes have the following GVMs:
Single Cab Ute: 4.3 tonnes.
Toyota Hilux Ute (including mine-spec): 3.1 tonnes.
Is it more expensive to rent a Ute one way?
Whether a one-way ute is more expensive or not will vary depending on the requested pick-up and drop-off locations, and the availability of your vehicle, which may be more limited. Cost will also factor in relocating the vehicle back to its original branch (aka, the drop fee). Typically, the further you want to travel, the more a one-way rental hire can help you save on fuel and time that you’d otherwise spend heading back to your starting location.
We recommend comparing your total trip costs if you choose one-way vs standard returns. With Redspot, you can check rates and vehicle availability through our online booking tool so you can determine what’s best for your plans.
Can more than one person drive a hired ute?
Yes, multiple drivers can absolutely drive your tradie ute rental! Just make sure all drivers present their licenses when you pick up the vehicle, and you’ll all be set to share driving duties. Usual T&Cs apply.
Please note that an additional driver’s fee may apply – unless you book our All-Inclusive package!
