How many seats does a sedan have?
A sedan typically has five seats – two in front and three in the back. This makes most sedans able to seat four to five people comfortably inside. If you need to seat more than five people, we recommend booking an SUV, minibus or 4WD to get your whole crew on the move.
Is a sedan automatic or manual?
Typically, a sedan can be either automatic or manual. With Redspot, you can drive easier with our quality fleet of automatic sedans.

Terminology Key.
Let us break down our package terms so you know exactly what may appear on your invoice:
*Damage liability excess: ‘Amount reduced by’ is dependent on the vehicle type and hire itinerary selected. See our Car Rental Cover page for more information.
**Contract fee: We have a small surcharge to cover our costs to draw up our rental agreement with you.
***Premium location fee: Sometimes a premium airport or downtown location will charge us an additional surcharge for each rental and we are upfront about this cost in your package! The price will depend on the location selected.
****Registration recovery fee: We pay a surcharge to cover our vehicle registration and compulsory third-party insurance costs and we highlight this clearly in your package breakdown.
At Redspot, we believe in straight-up honesty! Just so you’re in the loop, all the nitty-gritty on damage liability and extra charges can be found in our terms and conditions.
What to know before you book a sedan hire
There’s a high chance you’ve driven a sedan before, but if you’re not too familiar with car hire (especially for long trips), here are a few tips to get you rolling:

Bring a valid driver’s licence and credit card to book your next sedan hire
All rental vehicles require a valid credit or debit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. Planning on additional drivers? Bring their valid driver’s licences to pick-up, so you can share driving duties.

Minimum age and maximum age for sedan hire:
At Redspot, we say age is just a number! Young drivers over 21 years old can hire a sedan with us if they hold a P2 provisional licence (green Ps). No maximum age for car hire with us, so anyone above 21 can roam Australia to their heart’s content.

Hiring as a P-plater
If you’re a P-plater, you need to have held your Australian provisional P2 driver’s licence for a minimum of 1 year. The licence must also be valid for a minimum of 12 months from the collection date. Finally, don’t forget to scoop up the right insurance coverage for your trip. Please be advised that there is a daily surcharge for drivers under 25, so factor this into your budget beforehand. See our guide to hiring as a P-plater for more details.

Know your insurance coverage
All Redspot vehicles come with standard cover. For more damage cover options, you can also purchase our Collision Damage Waiver or Super Collision Damage Waiver in case of an accident.

Driving an electric vehicle
If it’s your first time driving an electric vehicle (EV), take a moment on a calm road or empty car park to familiarise yourself before setting off! An EV’s brakes may feel different, acceleration can be faster, and the lack of an obvious engine noise may throw off your driving if you aren’t used to it.

Know your range
No more running out of fuel when you least expect it! Learn the maximum range of your vehicle, stay on the proper roads and be sure to take breaks. If you’re driving an electric sedan, remember to look up EV charging stations before you head out.

Know your route
Research your road trip ahead of time to stay on top of the current road conditions. Check for any roadblocks, shutdowns or changed conditions. Additionally, make sure to confirm whether the gas or charging stations you plan to visit are still open.

Small and Compact Car Hire FAQs
What makes a sedan rental car a good choice for road trips?
A sedan is built for comfort and fuel efficiency, making it a smart pick for long drives and everyday travel. With smooth handling, a roomy boot for luggage, and excellent highway fuel economy, sedans are ideal for couples, small families, or business travellers who want an easy, quiet ride. Whether you’re cruising from Sydney to the Blue Mountains or zipping between meetings, a sedan rental keeps things comfortable and economical.
How much luggage can I fit in a sedan hire car?
Most full-size sedans comfortably fit two to three large suitcases in the boot, plus a few smaller bags in the cabin. If you’re travelling light, there’s plenty of space for passengers to stretch out. Sedans are great for airport pick-ups, city getaways, or business trips where you need a balance between luggage room and easy parking.
Are sedans more fuel efficient than SUVs or utes?
Yes — sedans typically use less fuel than larger vehicles like SUVs, 4WDs, or utes. Their aerodynamic shape and lighter build mean better mileage, especially for highway driving. If you’re looking to keep your fuel costs down while still enjoying a smooth and stable drive, a sedan rental is often the most efficient choice.
What’s the difference between compact, intermediate, and full-size sedans?
The difference comes down to size, comfort, and luggage space.
- Compact sedans are small, easy to park, and great for city driving.
- Intermediate sedans offer more space for passengers and bags — a solid all-rounder for most trips.
- Full-size sedans are the most spacious and comfortable, perfect for long drives or family holidays.
No matter which you choose, every Redspot sedan rental comes clean, modern, and ready to roll.
