When to use an SUV rental
An SUV, or ‘Sports Utility Vehicle’, offers outstanding legroom and luggage space, making them the perfect choice for long drives with up to five passengers. Even in compact SUVs built for city use, you and your crew can enjoy spacious seating with advanced safety features. Keeping you safe and comfortable, no matter the road conditions or the weather!
SUVs also offer higher ground clearance, improving visibility and traction control. With AWD (All-Wheel Drive) options for enhanced off-road safety, you’ve got all the features to gear you up for any terrain.
What is a standard SUV rental car?
A standard SUV rental car is a 5-seat vehicle with more cargo space than typical vehicles. It often includes roof storage space for sports items, such as skis, snowboards and more. A standard SUV is bigger than a sedan, or a mid-size and intermediate SUV, but smaller than a premium SUV which, depending on the model, can also fit more passengers.
A premium SUV may also be more expensive to hire, but comes with additional safety features such as
Best SUV rental for long-distance driving in Australia
For those iconic Aussie road trips, you’ve got the choice between standard, premium and hybrid SUV models. Which one should you choose to gear up to go the extra mile?
Generally, standard and premium SUVs are great for long-distance travelling because of the additional luggage space, enhanced safety features and added legroom for a more relaxing journey.
However, a hybrid SUV not only offers all the features of a premium SUV but also features enhanced fuel economy thanks to its optimised electric motor. This reduces the general pressure on the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), which helps you:
- Drive for longer
- Give off fewer carbon emissions
- Save up to 50% on fuel costs for your whole trip
While you can’t go wrong with an SUV for any long drive, consider renting a hybrid SUV to keep going the distance!
Spot-on SUV rental for dirt road driving
Going a bit off-trail? Then our SUV fleet may be just what the doctor ordered! Redspot’s SUV models with AWD (All-Wheel Drive) capabilities make these rides a great choice for beach parking or dirt road adventuring.
With an AWD SUV, you and your crew can enjoy enhanced traction and stability on gravel and dirt roads, giving you a safer, more comfortable ride.
An All-Wheel Drive’s enhanced traction even helps it stay steady on ice and wet roads, so you can ride with confidence, no matter the weather.
For trips involving rugged terrain, consider hiring a 4WD SUV for maximum torque and wheel power.

What to know before you hire an SUV
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are a few details to keep in mind when you’re hiring an SUV:
- Bring a valid driver’s licence and credit card to book your next SUV hire: All rental vehicles require a valid credit or debit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. Planning on an additional driver/s? Bring their valid driver’s licences along to share driving duties.
- Minimum age and maximum age for SUV hire: For young drivers over 21 years old who hold a Provisional P2 Licence, you can hire an SUV with Redspot! There is no maximum age for Redspot rental vehicles.
- Watch your speed: SUVs are larger cars that handle differently than the average vehicle. They are not designed to make quick, sharp turns. Be sure you go slowly around corners, and drive carefully in rain and snow.
- Know your insurance coverage: All Redspot vehicles come with standard cover. For more damage cover options, you can also purchase our Collision Damage Waiver or Super Collision Damage Waiver in case of an accident.
- Be mindful of spacing: As an SUV is bigger than a standard vehicle, be sure to keep track of your spacing while on the road! Leave plenty of room in front of and behind you, and consider how long it may take your vehicle to stop. Avoid sudden movements, and brake gradually whenever possible.
- Check your mirrors: Your mirrors may need to be further out than when you’re driving smaller vehicles. This helps to ensure you minimise your blind spots and avoid accidents. Since you may be sitting higher than you are used to, be aware that it could be harder to see things lower to the ground, such as vehicles directly behind you.
- Know your route: Be sure to research your trip ahead of time to ensure you know the driving conditions on the road ahead. Make sure you know where the best petrol stations are on your route, and check if any are closed.

SUV Rental FAQs
How many suitcases fit in a standard SUV?
Depends on the SUV! But on average, standard or large SUVs can fit approximately 3 big bags and 2 small ones. Mid-sized to small SUVs typically fit in 2 large bags and one small one.
Is a standard SUV a 4WD?
While SUVs can be offered in 4WD and AWD models, a standard SUV is not automatically an All-Wheel-Drive or a 4WD. Whether your SUV car is capable of AWD or 4WD depends on the car’s make or model.
Need a 4WD or AWD SUV? Get in touch with us at 1300 668 810, or call or email your local branch to see if there are any SUVs with AWD available for you.
How much to rent an SUV car per day?
Depends on your plans! Vehicle type, booking duration, useful add-ons, seasonal factors and more will affect the cost of renting an SUV car.
Check out our handy Redspot rental car booking tool to scope out the latest SUV rates. Pick and choose from a wide range of well-maintained, quality vehicles and hit the road with a perfectly matched pair of wheels.
How many seats does an SUV have?
A typical SUV has approximately 5 seats, but other models may have up to 7 seats available.
At Redspot, all our SUV models come with 5 seats and plenty of internal space for a more comfortable ride.
What is the difference between midsize and standard SUV rental?
A midsize or intermediate SUV is smaller and more compact than a standard SUV. However, it still has enough room to fit 5 people comfortably with cargo space left over for luggage. Depending on the engine, a midsize SUV may also be more fuel-efficient than a standard or premium SUV.
What is the difference between AWD and 4WD SUV?
In an AWD (All-Wheel Drive) SUV, the engine sends equal power to each of the car’s four wheels. On the other hand, a 4WD engine can set different levels of power to each wheel for better traction and control.
Choose your SUV type based on the terrain you plan to tackle. 4WDs are a good choice for rugged terrain or severe weather conditions, as the car can offer more running power when necessary. An AWD is good for snow and icy weather conditions, or when the terrain you’re driving through changes often.
