Mine Spec Vehicle Requirements in Australia
In Australia, mine-compliant vehicles must be safe and dependable. They should comply with Australian environmental regulations, adapting to various mining conditions while ensuring the comfort and safety of your team.
General Mine Spec Vehicle Requirements
Mine spec vehicle requirements in Australia can vary by site and operation type, but there are key standards that apply across the board.
Vehicles must comply with Australian Design Rules (ADRs), and national safety and environmental standards. Often, there are also additional company-specific requirements to keep in mind when hiring mine compliant vehicles.
On any mine or project site, safety comes first. Australian mine spec vehicles must feature:
Rollover protection (ROPS)
Seat belts and/or harnesses
Fire extinguishers
First aid kits
Visibility and communication tools, e.g. flashing strobes, reflective strips, LED lights, high-visibility flags, and UHF two-way radios (essential for preventing incidents in low-visibility or remote conditions).
Other standard mine spec safety features include:
Emergency Triangles
Call signs
Reversing alarm
Fire extinguisher
Wheel nut indicators
Wheel chocks
Redarc brake controller
Dual battery system and battery isolator
Heavy-duty suspension
Emergency kits
And many more
Mine Spec Vehicle Requirements WA
For WA, mine spec vehicles must be clearly seen and heard onsite using features like flashing lights, audible warning signals and proper seating.
It’s up to employers and site supervisors to keep vehicles compliant through regular maintenance and staying up-to-date on the latest health and safety procedures. The goal is simple – boost safety and reduce the risk of workplace injuries, so you and your crew can operate with ease.
Mine Spec Vehicle Requirements QLD
In Queensland, mine spec vehicles need to be sturdy, safe and fully equipped for rugged and uneven site conditions.
For diesel vehicles over 125 kW, exhaust treatment and regular emissions testing are also a must to keep everything running safely and smoothly.

Red Hot Driving Tips for Mine Spec Vehicles
Lay the foundation for safer, smoother driving. Whether it’s your first time behind the mine spec wheel or you’re a seasoned pro, always prepare for the difference between a standard vehicle and a mine spec hire.
Drive safer with our mine spec tips:
Allow more space: Typically, mine spec equipped vehicles weigh more than a standard car, so it also takes more time to brake and maneuver. Allow more space between yourself and any vehicles in front, while also always taking corners slowly.
Note the height: Don’t forget you are in a higher vehicle and may sometimes drive through a height-restricted area. Be sure to always check that you are below any height restrictions before entering the included area.
Account for a larger blind spot: The blind spot in a mine spec ute or truck may be longer than a standard car. Use your mirrors more frequently and be vigilant in checking your blind spots.
Switch on your headlights: During sunset and night driving hours, always ensure your headlights remain switched on. Not only can you see more clearly, but other vehicles can see you better as well, which helps to prevent accidents in busy work sites.
Stay on top of your maintenance: Regular inspections, ongoing servicing and scheduled maintenance are critical in minimising risk of accident and injury. With our handy swapping out process and rigorous maintenance, you can rely on Redspot to keep you rolling with confidence!
Mine Spec Car Hire FAQs
What makes a car mine spec?
Mine spec vehicles are modified with specific safety and operational features, designed for safer driving through the rough terrain on a mine site. Vehicles must also comply with the mine site’s strict compliance and operational standards, which are set by state governments and operating companies.
Examples of essential mine spec modifications include safety features such as:
Reflective strips, LED lights, mine bar, sand flag for improved visibility
UHF radios and satellite phones for communication
Emergency Triangles
Call signs
Reversing alarm
Flashing strobe
Fire extinguisher
Wheel nut indicators
Wheel chocks
Redarc brake controller
Dual battery system and battery isolator
Heavy-duty suspension
Emergency kits
All vehicle types, including light hire vehicles, heavy and mobile equipment, must adhere to the set safety requirements to be permitted onsite.
How much does it cost to hire a mine spec ute?
Rental costs vary depending on your needs. Vehicle type, booking duration, chosen damage excess cover, seasonal factors and more will affect the cost of hiring a mine spec ute. That said, average daily hire rates may range from $90 to $300 for smaller vehicles like 4WD utes. For larger trucks, this can range from $120 to $450.
Check out our handy Redspot rental car booking tool to scope out the latest rates. Pick and choose from a wide range of quality vehicles and ride through rugged terrains with ease!
Do you cover all the mining specifications for light vehicles?
With Redspot, all mine-specific vehicles (mine-spec utes, trucks, 4WDs, 12-seater buses, etc.) cover mine compliance requirements. This includes mine-spec ‘light vehicles’, i.e. with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonnes or less. Smaller, basic vehicles not listed as ‘mine spec’ are not mine site compliant.
Do mine spec rental cars have a km limit?
Yes, mine spec rental cars typically have a daily km limit. The exact km amount depends on the location. For example, you can get up to 140 km free p/day ($0.30 per excess kilometre + GST) for Redspot mine spec rentals in Regional WA, SA and NT. For QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC and TAS, get up to 130 km free p/day ($0.30 per excess kilometre + GST).
Who can hire a mine spec vehicle?
Redspot ‘mine-spec’ or ‘safety-spec’ vehicles are available for hire to businesses that require specialised transport for Aussie worksites with safety compliance rules (mining sites, large construction project sites, etc.). This includes mining companies, construction companies, government agencies and more.
Can P Platers hire cars?
You sure can! We’re one of the few Aussie companies that give the green light for local P-platers over 21 to rent a car, with mine-spec and commercial vehicles included.
Keeping you safe is our top priority, so we have a few safety rules that are designed to make sure you get from Point A to Point B without a hitch.
If you are a P-plater, you must:
Hold a Provisional P2 licence (green Ps).
Hold a driver’s licence that is valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of rental collection.
What documents do I need to hire a mine spec vehicle?
Don’t sweat the paperwork with Redspot! For mine spec rentals, all you need to bring for vehicle collection is your valid driver’s licence. Depending on your company agreement*, you may also need to present a valid credit card.
*If your company is set up for split bill back or all paid for by the driver, please present your driver’s licence AND credit card at pickup. Remember to check with your employer and ensure you have all the correct details to get rolling.
Whether your company’s rental setup is full bill back, split bill back or all paid for by the driver upon pickup, we’ve got your papers covered so you can focus on the road.
