- You must have held your provisional driver’s licence for a minimum of 1 year.

What type of car is best for a family of 4 or 5?
A reliable sedan, SUV or hybrid hatchback is ideal for a family of 4 or 5. A sedan offers a safe driving experience with compactness for city driving. SUVs blend comfort with power so you can tackle both city roads and rural outback terrain. Hybrid hatchbacks are spacious yet help families save on fuel by boosting the engine with an EV battery that self-charges.
What type of car is best for a family of 7?
The perfect car for a family of 7 would be a versatile people mover like our Kia Carnival (or similar). With enough seats for the full brood and luggage space, you can easily head out on a road trip as a family of 7.
Can I hire a family car with a foreign licence?
Yes! Temporary overseas visitors can hire a car with:
- A full, valid driver’s licence and passport.
- Licences must have photo identification.
- If the licence is not in English, then you will need an officially translated document from your embassy or road traffic authority in your home country.
- Some countries may need to apply for an international driving permit.
Can both parents drive a Redspot family car rental?
We can easily add both parents to any car rental booking. To be covered under the rental agreement, we will need to see both driver’s licences and a credit card for a small daily surcharge.
We are bringing our senior parents. Do you have a maximum age limit?
At Redspot, age is just a number! We have no maximum age for any car rental; we just need a full, valid driver’s licence, and you are good to go.
How do we pay for tolls in a rental car?
Your credit card on file will automatically be charged for any toll roads you drive through, plus an administration fee of A$1.30 per toll. This can sometimes take a week or so to fully process as our system needs to match the licence plate to the hirer’s details.
You can opt in to our Toll Road Waiver service for the ultimate convenience. For a daily fee, we can take care of any toll road charges so you can drive without limits.
What are the child seat rules in Australia?
The correct car seat for your child will largely depend on their age, weight and height. Keep in mind, this will naturally change as they grow! As a general guide for car seat hire in Australia:
- 0 to 6 months: Rear-facing baby seat with an in-built harness
- 6 months to 4 years: Rear-facing or forward-facing child seat with an in-built harness
- 4 years to 7 years: Forward-facing child seat with an inbuilt harness or a booster seat with a harness
- Over 7 years: Booster seat with a harness. If your child is taller than 145 cm, they’ll be able to use the standard seat and an adult seatbelt.
There may be exceptions to these rules depending on the height and weight of your little one.
We are bringing our own baby seat. Can it be installed in a Redspot car rental?
Of course. All car seat fittings must be installed by the driver to ensure correct installation.
Will a hybrid car rental save us fuel on our family road trip?
Yes, in general, a hybrid car could save you money by using less fuel to cover the same distance as a regular petrol car.
Manufacturers tend to have a lower fuel efficiency score on their hybrid models when compared to petrol models (by testing how many litres of petrol it takes to drive 100km).
For example, the Toyota Camry Hybrid uses just 3.9L per 100km, while the petrol version uses around 6L. So, if you were driving the 100km stretch of the Great Ocean Road, the hybrid would only need 3.9 litres of fuel, compared to 6 litres in the petrol model. It’s a smooth way to accelerate your fuel savings and put that money towards further family outings!
How early should I book a family car rental?
You should book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. In the peak school holidays, some of our popular locations do sell out, especially for our family car rentals. With free cancellations on bookings, it’s easy to plan and ensure you lock in the right vehicle for your family.
