Tassie Road Trips from Hobart
Hobart isn’t just a great city to stroll around and enjoy the sights. With its proximity to Tasmania’s many natural wonders and scenic environments, you can have some excellent adventures with little effort. Here are just a few road trip ideas to test your Redspot SUV out on.
Bruny Island
Drive down the Channel Highway for 40 minutes to Kettering, then hop on the vehicle ferry for your Bruny Island adventure. Enjoy some of Tasmania’s best cheese, oysters, and whiskey in an adventurous but easy road trip. Take in the view from The Neck, and explore the wilderness around Cape Bruny Lighthouse.
Mount Field National Park
Located 70km northwest of Hobart, Mount Field National Park is home to diverse natural wonders such as the massive trees of Russell Falls and alpine areas where snow can sometimes be seen outside winter. The drive to Mount Field National Park takes you through Derwent Valley and the town of New Norfolk, with plenty of sites along the way.
Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula
A scenic hour and a half’s drive and 95km from Hobart, the route to Port Arthur and the Tasman Peninsula runs smoothly, thanks to sealed roads and clear signs. Port Arthur Historic Site is the main attraction for history enthusiasts, while the drive itself is worthwhile in its own right. Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen are just a couple of the wonders you can make a quick detour to as you travel to Port Arthur.
Freycinet National Park
A two-and-a-half-hour, 192km drive up the Tasman Highway, Freycinet is a long but relaxed drive thanks to sealed roads. Be mindful of keeping to 60km/h at night, because you just might encounter wombats and wallabies on your drive. Among the park’s highlights is Wineglass Bay, with its white sands, brilliant turquoise water, and pink granite Hazards mountain range.
Please note: Our vehicles can only be driven on gravelled, sealed, gazetted or metalled roads and cannot be driven on unsealed roads such as beaches, creeks and fields without permission. Don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of great sealed road trips in Tassie!!

Do I need a 4WD or will a standard SUV be suitable for visiting Cradle Mountain?
A standard SUV is ideal for Cradle Mountain as the roads are sealed.
Can I take a hired SUV from Hobart to Bruny Island on the ferry?
Yes, you can take a Redspot SUV hire on the Bruny Island ferry. Bruny Island is a beauty, but be prepared as there are many unsealed roads. Redspot excludes unsealed roads unless it’s the most direct access to a recognised accommodation, service station or tourist attraction. Driving on riverbeds is always excluded.
Can you hire an SUV to go one way?
Yes, you can. One-way SUV hire is available at our Tasmanian offices, pending vehicle availability. For example, you can pick up your car at our Launceston City branch, and drop it off at our Hobart Airport branch.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way SUV hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented.

Do you install baby seats for us?
No, unfortunately, we can’t install baby seats in your hire car for liability reasons.
Safety is our number one priority at Redspot. We voluntarily comply with Australian state laws and safety policies, and therefore cannot install child seats for customers. However, we do offer detailed instructions on how to install a baby seat as safely and securely as possible during vehicle pick-up.
What is the age requirement to hire an SUV with Redspot?
You must be 25 years and over to hire our full range of SUVs in Hobart. For young drivers between 21 and 25, you can hire any of our compact and economy SUVs instead.
Can I hire an SUV with a foreign licence?
Yes, of course you can! Temporary overseas visitors can hire a car, but you must have:
- A full, valid driver’s licence and passport.
- Licences must include photo identification.
- If the licence is not in English, you will need an officially translated document from your embassy or road traffic authority in your home country.
- Some countries may need to apply for an international driving permit.
Can I take a rental SUV off-road?
Only our 4WD car hires are suitable for off-road driving. If you’re hiring a standard SUV for your big Tasmania trip, it’s best to stick to sealed roads to ensure you are safe and covered under insurance.
Is a standard SUV or an intermediate SUV bigger?
In general, our standard SUVs are bigger than our intermediate SUVs and offer more passenger or cargo space. Our intermediate SUVs are midsize vehicles or crossovers and may have improved fuel efficiency over standard SUVs.
How many passengers do your SUVs fit?
