What to know before you hire a Ute in Townsville
Driving a ute for the first time can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to zipping around in a compact car. Don’t stress, you can drive a ute with a standard driver’s licence and only need to make a few safe adjustments:

Give yourself extra space
A ute is generally longer than any standard car, so give yourself extra space when turning corners, switching lanes or parking.

Be aware of blind spots
Adjust your mirrors before setting off and always do an extra check before changing lanes or merging.

Bring your driver’s licence
Bring a valid driver’s licence and a credit card to book your next ute hire. All rental vehicles require a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. Planning on additional drivers? Bring their licences too, so you can share ute duties without any problems.

Get familiar
A ute may feel really high and bulky compared to other vehicles, and the dashboard may be set out differently. Spend a little time getting comfortable before releasing that handbrake.

U-turns
You can only perform a u-turn in Queensland when there is no sign prohibiting it. U-turns are also prohibited at traffic lights. You must also give way to all other vehicles, including bicycles, personal mobility devices and pedestrians. Be mindful of your vehicle’s larger size, and check your blind spots carefully.

Inspect the ute
During vehicle pickup, make sure to thoroughly inspect your rental ute and let our friendly team know about any issues. This helps you avoid potential charges later and gets you on the road with a top-notch vehicle and a confident mind.

Plan your route
It’s crucial to remember that utes are larger than regular cars and may not fit in all spaces, even in Townsville. Be sure to plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions, and avoid tight spots or low clearances.

Yes, you can hire a one-way ute from many of our branches across Australia! Depending on where you are going, you can pick up your ute in Townsville and drop it off in Brisbane, Cairns and more.
Please be advised that one-way rentals typically come with a drop fee (aka a one-way fee) to cover the cost of moving the vehicle back to its initial location. This fee will be shown to you during your booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day one.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way ute hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented.
