Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cross border fee for rental cars?

A cross-border fee is a charge applied when you take a rental car across state or national borders. For example, if you’re driving from Queensland to New South Wales or any other state, this fee helps cover the logistics of moving the vehicle and any potential risks. With Redspot, we don’t charge cross-border fees for any of our vehicles, so you can roam freely.

That said, one-way car hires are only available between Redspot Darwin branches in the Northern Territory. For instance, if you’ve hired from one of our NT branches, you can drop off your rental car at our Darwin Airport, Darwin City or Holtze locations. Rent from our Darwin City or Holtze branches, then drop your ride off at the airport and jet off with ease!

Can you take a hire car on a ferry?

Yes, you can hop on a ferry and take your Redspot hire car along. For Darwin, this means you can easily access places like Wagait Beach or the Cox Peninsula with the Mandorah ferry.

Please note that there are a few special considerations that apply:

  • The elected damage liability does not apply while on the ferry, i.e. in the event of the ferry sinking or the hire car being damaged while on the ferry, the customer is up for car replacement/repair costs.
  • There must be a gazetted road (a sealed or unsealed road regularly maintained by the Australian government) on the other end of the ferry.

Can you hire a car overseas?

Coming in from overseas? No problem! Tourists are more than welcome to rent a car with Redspot. All you need to do is show your valid overseas driver’s licence and passport upon vehicle pick-up.

Loving Darwin so much, you’ll be staying for over 3 months? Then you’ll need to transition to a local driver’s licence. How to do this can vary depending on the state or territory you’re in. Be sure to check in with our friendly Darwin team for local advice.

Note: Make sure to bring a physical driver’s licence to the kiosk. Certain digital licences or passports are not accepted as valid documents.* If your licence is not in English, we’ll need a translated version from your embassy or traffic authority in your home country.

For more information, see our complete guide to renting a vehicle with an overseas licence.

*Digital licences or passports are accepted from the USA, Singapore, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

If I purchase a full fuel tank, do I get a refund for any fuel remaining in the tank on return?

No, unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for any fuel left in your hire car. Alternatively, you can choose to only get charged for the fuel you’ve used (note this comes at a higher rate than prepayment).

To avoid the hassle of refuelling before vehicle return, you can pre-pay for a fuel tank of fuel at the start of your rental! Check out all your fuel options with Redspot, so you don’t have to drive away on fumes.

You've taken a bond on my credit card, when can I expect this to be returned?

With Redspot, your rental car bond is usually released between 3-5 business days after the rental is returned. Please note that this may depend on your bank or debit/credit card provider. If your bond is not returned within the expected timeframe, please contact the Redspot branch where you hired the vehicle. We’ll work with you to resolve the issue ASAP.

Any additional charges, like damages or late returns, may be deducted from the bond before it is refunded. This helps us cover repair costs and other payments.

Queries or concerns? Please get in touch with the Redspot branch you hired your vehicle from by phone or email. Our local team will be more than happy to sort out any questions you may have.

Can P Platers hire cars?

You sure can. Redspot is one of the few Aussie companies that let local P-platers over 21 rent a car with us. You can even rent mine-spec and commercial vehicles with us.

Keeping you safe means everything to us. We have a few safety rules designed to make sure your journey is as smooth as we can make it.

If you are a P-plater, you will need:

  • A Provisional P2 licence (green Ps).
  • A driver’s licence that is valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of rental collection.

When you rent with us, please remember to factor in the daily surcharge. This surcharge applies to any drivers holding an Australian provisional driver’s licence. Keep in mind that P-platers can also reduce damage cover to a maximum of $330.

As an under-25 driver, you have full access to our range of small to medium-sized sedans and hatchbacks. P2 licence holders over 25 can enjoy renting any vehicle available in our entire fleet.

Check out our Provisional Drivers guide for all the details to get you geared up for the road.

Can more than one person drive a hire car?

Do rental cars have cameras?

Some rental cars have dashcams and/or rearview cameras for safety reasons. Here at Redspot, we want to give you full transparency. We’ll tell you in the rental agreement if your vehicle is equipped with any kind of camera.

We also value your privacy. Redspot will never install an internal camera in our vehicles, and we do not film you inside your car as you drive.

Do rental cars have GPS navigation?

Unfortunately, our rental cars do not come with GPS or Satellite navigation systems. Don’t worry; we’ve still got you covered for navigational help!

Most Redspot cars have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, so you can enjoy hands-free navigation. This helps you stay safe while driving-  we don’t recommend you use your mobile phone for navigation without some sort of hands-free system.

Please bring along a USB or USB-C connector to use the location services we have available. We don’t provide mobile connectors, so it’s best to come prepared to make full use of these services.

Can they tell if you vape in a rental car?

Most Aussie car hires are smoke-free fleets, and that includes Redspot. Please smoke or vape outside or away from your rental car. This way, you can avoid any cleaning fees you could be charged if your hire car smells like vape or smoke on return.

I got a speeding fine but my friend was driving the rental at the time. What do I do?

We’d advise contacting your friend so they can take care of the fine. If it’s possible, try to keep any evidence that you were not driving when the speeding fine happened.

Regardless of who was driving at the time, we will need to send the fine to the address we have on record. If this happens, please note there will be a $55 administration fee charged to you. Please adhere to local road rules to avoid extra hassles and keep your wallet and friendships intact!
