Small Cars vs SUVs for Senior Drivers
| Driving Comfort | Compact / Small Cars | Compact SUVs |
| Ease of getting in & out | Familiar, stable feel for long-time sedan drivers. | A higher seating position can reduce bending and twisting for easier entry and exit. |
| Seating comfort | Comfortable, car-like seating and a smooth ride | Upright seating posture with chair-height feel many drivers find comfortable on longer trips |
| Visibility of the road | Lower centre of gravity and often very good forward visibility | A higher driving position can provide a broader road view and increased confidence |

How to Hire a Car as a Senior in Australia
We try to keep the process as simple as possible so you spend less time on admin and more time enjoying the open road.
Booking by phone or website
- You can book online using our easy steps or simply give us a call on 1300 668 810. Please use +61 2 8303 2222 if you are outside Australia.
- Select the pick-up and return locations.
- Add in your travel dates.
- Choose an available vehicle and select the insurance coverage package for you.
- Add extras like additional drivers, accessories or a fuel package.
- Add in your driver’s licence details and select your payment method.
Our Smooth Pick Up Process
- You will find the pick-up address on your confirmation email. Head here for the pick-up time.
- Our team will ask to see your driver’s licence to check its validity and your credit card to take a bond deposit (a pre-authorisation hold on your card, not a charge).
- You will be taken through your insurance package and rental agreement. Please ask our friendly team any questions you have.
- Our team will then give you the keys and show you to your vehicle. If you need a walk-through of the vehicle features, our helpful team will be more than happy to assist.
The Drop-Off Process
- The drop-off address will be in your confirmation email.
- Before all drop-offs, your car must be filled with petrol or fully charged, unless you bought the pre-pay fuel package at booking or pick-up.
- If returning during office hours, our team will guide you to a parking bay and collect the keys from you.
- If you are returning out of hours, park in a free, signposted Redspot parking bay and put your keys in the dropbox.
- After you have dropped off, our team will inspect the vehicle and organise your end-of-rental invoice. If there is no damage, your bond pre-authorisation payment will be reversed within 14 days.
Australian Licence Rules for Senior Drivers
Unlike some car rental companies, we don’t need to see a medical certificate for senior drivers. A full, valid Australian driver’s licence in the driver’s name is enough.
Temporary overseas visitors can also hire a car with:
- A full, valid driver’s licence and passport
- Licences must have photo identification
- If the licence is not in English, then you will need an officially translated document from your embassy or road traffic authority in your home country
- Some countries may need to apply for an international driver’s permit
Additional Driver Benefits

1. FREE additional driver at the same address
All we need is proof of address and their valid driver’s licence at pick-up, and we will add them to the rental agreement for free.

2. FREE additional drivers with an all-inclusive “Executive Package”
Upgrade to the all-inclusive Executive Package to get free additional drivers, reduced liability excess, additional windscreen and headlight coverage and more. The Executive Package will cost more but brings full peace of mind on the road.

3. Or, pay a small fee per day
Whether you’re on a work secondment in Australia or in-between car ownership, a long-term rental could be the ideal solution for your family. With 24/7 roadside assistance and a well-maintained fleet to choose from, a long-term hire is hassle-free. Book online or call our team to arrange a long-term hire for your family’s schedule.
Do I need a credit card to rent with Redspot?
Yes, we need a credit card in the main driver’s name at pick-up to take the bond deposit. If this is your first time renting with Redspot, then we may also need to see another form of identification, such as a utility bill.
Insurance and Excess Cover for Senior Drivers
Every car rental comes with our standard package, which includes insurance coverage for damage liability, or you can upgrade to the Executive Package. The main differences are:
Standard package: Cheaper rate. The excess you will pay in the event of a claim ranges between $5,200 to $6,200.
Executive Package: Will increase the rate, and your excess liability will be reduced to zero depending on the vehicle type selected (zero out-of-pocket liability if something goes wrong). You also get extra coverage for accidental damage to windshields and headlights.

Buying vs Renting for Senior Drivers
Some senior drivers don’t need a car all year round. In these situations, renting as and when you need it could be more economical and hassle-free.
With 35+ locations in Australia in both airport and city spots, we make it easy for senior drivers to pick up a rental car whenever they need it.
| Why some senior drivers may prefer renting | Renting a Vehicle | Owning a Vehicle |
| Upfront cost | No large purchase price or long-term loan commitment | Requires purchase cost, financing, or savings |
| Flexibility | Choose a vehicle only when needed | Vehicle is always owned, whether used often or not |
| Maintenance & servicing | Rental company handles servicing and maintenance | Owner arranges and pays for maintenance |
| Registration & insurance | Included in the rental arrangement and you can upgrade to reduce excess liability | Ongoing registration and insurance responsibilities |
| Breakdown support | 24/7 roadside assistance included | Owner manages roadside cover separately |
| No depreciation concerns | No worries about resale value or trade-ins | Vehicle value decreases over time |
| Reduced long-term commitments | No need to think about future replacement cycles | Ownership involves eventual replacement decisions |
| Storage & parking | No need for permanent parking when not using a vehicle | Requires ongoing parking/storage space |
| Travel convenience | Rent only during holidays, family visits, or special occasions | Vehicle remains idle during periods of low use |
| Reduced administration | No selling, registration renewal, or trade-in process | Ownership involves ongoing paperwork and admin |
