What to know before you hire a truck in Hobart
Our truck hires can help you handle all your cargo in just one trip, but it’s natural to be nervous if you’ve never driven one before. Here are just a few things to keep in mind:

Bring your driver’s licence
Please bring your physical driver’s license and credit card to book your next truck hire. Our rental vehicles need a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. If you are planning on any additional drivers, that’s no problem. Just make sure they bring their licences with them, so you can share the trucking duties without any problems.

Consider truck size
Keep in mind that even smaller trucks are taller than standard car hires. Trucks are more affected by high winds than cars. Drive slower to keep you and your belongings safe on the road!

Check your fuel policy
Understand the fuel policy (whether it’s full-to-full or pre-paid) so you can transport your cargo while keeping your budget under control.

Inspect the truck
When you pick up your truck, be sure to thoroughly inspect it. You may also want to take pictures of any bumps or scrapes. This helps you avoid potential charges later down the road and it lets our team know about any issues.

Plan your route
It’s important to remember that your truck is larger than a regular vehicle and may not fit all spaces. Plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions and avoid tight spots or low clearance roads in Hobart.

Watch the road
Tasmania has bustling wildlife and many winding roads along your route. Be sure to watch the road for crucial signage, and be ready to stop for kangaroos and other animals. Don’t get distracted.

Move easily with accessory add-ons
Get moving accessories to make moving as stress-free as possible whenever you can! This is especially helpful for transporting fragile items and appliances, like glassware and fridges.
Hobart truck hire FAQs
How much to hire a truck in Hobart?
The cost of hiring a truck in Hobart can vary depending on your vehicle model, rental period durations, if you’re using a one-way hire and the kilometres you’ve driven. Just put your details into our booking tool and we’ll let you know how much your truck hire will cost.
How do I operate a truck tailgate?
To operate your rental truck’s tailgate, you need to:
- Unlock the vehicle: Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and switched on before operating the tailgate.
- Find the release button: Locate the tailgate release button. It may be on the keyfob, inside the vehicle or on the side of the tailgate itself.
- Open the tailgate: Lift the tailgate up and out to open it. If the truck has a power tailgate, the release button may also have a lift button.
- Loading: Be sure to position the tailgate on a stable, level surface that is clear of obstacles.
- Close the tailgate: Using the release controls, lift the tailgate and ensure that it latches. With a power tailgate, you may need to stow it back into position.
Need a bit more guidance? Just ask our friendly staff how to operate your tailgate when you pick up your vehicle, and they’ll be more than happy to help you.
Are there places I can’t drive in Hobart?
Yes, there are some areas you may be prohibited from entering while driving a truck in Hobart. These areas include:
- Argyle Street (between Warwick St and Federal St)
- Brisbane Street (between Argyle St and Brooker Ave)
- Burnett Street (between Brooker Ave and Campbell St)
- Cascade Road (between Macquarie St and Cascade Brewery)
- Davey Street and Macquarie Street: These commuting routes have more restrictions on roadworks and activities during peak hour, which may impact heavy vehicle driving.
Load-limited bridges and roads may also require a special permit from the Transport Commissioner. Be sure to check your route ahead of time to avoid any issues.
Can you hire a truck to go one way?
With Redspot, yes, you can! With our flexible one-way rental packages, you can pick up your hire truck in one location and drop it off in another without stressing about the return trip. For instance, you could rent a truck from our Hobart City branch and drop it off with our Launceston Airport team once you’ve finished.
Please keep in mind that one-way rentals usually come with a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be shown to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.
How can I secure the item I’m transporting?
When you’re packing your vehicle, be sure that all items are safely wrapped and packaged. When packing into the truck, be sure you use the ratchet straps, buckle straps and cargo net to secure your load to the truck bed.
Pack each item tightly to minimise movement, and place the heavier items against the truck’s walls. If possible, use a friction mat to further enhance stability and prevent sliding.
What is the oldest age to drive a rental truck in Australia?
At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! We say that age is just a number. That’s why we allow senior drivers to rent a truck with us, to make moving or transporting cargo easier.
Can I rent a truck with a normal licence?
Yes, at Redspot, you can rent our 3.5 tonne trucks with a normal licence without any issues. To hire a Truck in Australia (including our Moorooka branch), you will need:
- A valid credit card or debit card* or purchase order/prepaid voucher**.
- A valid driver’s licence and the licence of any other drivers using the car. Licence not in English? Please present an official translation from your embassy or home nation’s traffic authority.
- Does your licence show your current address? If not, please provide documented proof of address, such as a utility bill.
- If you are not an Australian citizen, you must provide your passport.
*Debit cards: Must have the customer’s name displayed, and the ability to make online payments e.g. Visa or Mastercard debit cards.

Are there restrictions on truck driving in Tasmania?
Yes, there are restrictions on truck driving in Tasmania for any vehicles that fall under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). Heavy vehicles are defined as vehicles over 12 tonnes or buses seating more than 12 people.
These restrictions should not affect you in a Redspot truck, as our Hino 300’s GVM is under 4,495kg.
Do Redspot moving trucks have unlimited kms?
While most standard hire cars come with unlimited kms, at Redspot, we do impose a 130km p/day limit on vans, trucks and utes in Hobart to help us sustain the fleet. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.
For more info, please contact our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.
What are the excess km charges?
With Redspot, you get 150 km free per day. Any further travel may result in excess km charges, for $0.30 per excess kilometre + GST.
