What to know before you hire a truck in Sydney

Hiring a truck is a great way to move everything in one trip, but it’s normal to feel a bit unsure if you haven’t driven one before. If you’re planning to drive a truck around Sydney, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

drivers licence

Bring your driver’s licence

Please bring your physical driver’s licence and credit card when collecting your truck hire. Our rental vehicles require a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. If you plan to have additional drivers, that’s no problem, just make sure they bring their licences as well so you can share the driving.

ute carry load

Consider truck size

Even smaller trucks are taller and larger than a standard car. Keep in mind that trucks can be more affected by strong winds and require more space on the road. Driving a little slower and allowing extra braking distance will help keep you and your belongings safe while travelling around Sydney.

Fuel Policy

Check your fuel policy

Make sure you understand the fuel policy for your hire (such as full-to-full or pre-paid). Knowing this in advance will help you plan refuelling stops and keep your moving budget under control.

Inspection

Inspect the truck at pick-up

When you collect your truck, take a few minutes to inspect it carefully. It’s a good idea to take photos of any existing marks or scratches. This can help avoid potential charges later and ensure our team is aware of the truck’s condition.

route

Plan your route through Sydney

Because trucks are larger than regular vehicles, they may not fit in certain areas. Plan your route ahead of time and check for height restrictions, low-clearance car parks, narrow streets and tunnel restrictions. This is especially important in Sydney’s CBD and older suburbs, where space can be tight.

Be aware of busy roads

Sydney roads can be busy, particularly during peak hours. Keep an eye out for road signs, bus lanes, cyclists and pedestrians, and allow extra space when merging or changing lanes. Staying alert will help you navigate city traffic more safely.

rental cost

Move easily with accessory add-ons

Moving accessories such as trolleys, straps and protective blankets can make loading and transporting items much easier. They’re especially helpful when moving fragile items or large appliances like fridges.

Sydney truck hire FAQs

How much does it cost to hire a truck in Sydney?

The cost of hiring a truck in Sydney can change depending on factors like vehicle model, how long you are renting for, fleet availability, and mileage. Just give us your details when you use Redspot’s handy booking tool to get a cost estimate for your hiring period.

Do I need to pay a bond?

Yes, you typically need to pay a bond when you’re renting with us. The amount can vary between $100 to $1000 depending on the vehicle and booking plan or if you are a first time local renter

We’ll be sure to let you know exactly what you are paying during your initial booking process, including any bonds.

Can I drive on Sydney toll roads?

Yes, you can drive on Sydney Toll roads while you are in a hired truck. All Redspot vehicles are fitted with an e-Toll tag that automatically records tolls. You can either pay per toll plus a small admin fee, or purchase our unlimited toll package to cover your costs.

You can also bring your own toll tag, but please be sure to remove our tag, or you may be charged twice for each toll.

How do I operate a truck tailgate?

To operate your rental truck’s tailgate, you need to:

  1. Unlock the vehicle: Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and switched on before operating the tailgate.
  2. Find the release button: Locate the tailgate release button. It may be on the key fob, inside the vehicle or on the side of the tailgate itself.
  3. Open the tailgate: Lift the tailgate up and out to open it. If the truck has a power tailgate, the release button may also have a lift button.
  4. Loading: Be sure to position the truck on a stable, level surface before loading.
  5. Close the tailgate: Using the release controls, lift the tailgate and ensure that it latches. With a power tailgate, you may need to stow it back into position.

Need a bit more guidance? Just ask our friendly staff how to operate your tailgate when you pick up your vehicle, and they’ll be more than happy to help you.

Are there places where I can’t drive a truck in Sydney?

Yes, there are many areas where you may be prohibited from driving a box truck in Sydney. Truck restrictions typically apply when the vehicle is over 4.5t GVM, as this is when it is categorised as a ‘heavy vehicle.’

While our trucks are typically under this threshold, they may still be treated as a heavy vehicle in certain areas. Areas to be aware of include:

  • Signed areas: Be aware of roads or streets signed ‘NO TRUCKS’, as your vehicle may not be used unless it is at or below the mass/length shown on the sign.
  • Restricted bridges and streets: If a bridge, street or tunnel has a height restriction of under 3.2 m, your box truck will not fit.
  • No truck/ Local traffic only areas: Local councils may place signs to exclude specific vehicles from that area. These signs may also specify a specific weight and height.

Be sure to check your route ahead of time to ensure you avoid any prohibited areas.

Can you hire a truck to go one way?

With Redspot, yes, absolutely! With our flexible one-way truck hire packages, you can pick up your hire truck in one location and drop it off in another branch without stressing about the return trip. For instance, you could rent a truck from our Lidcombe branch and drop it off in our Coburg branch once you’re finished.

Please keep in mind that one-way rentals usually come with a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be shown to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.

How can I secure the item I’m transporting?

When you’re packing your vehicle, be sure that all items are safely wrapped and packaged. When packing into the truck, be sure you use the ratchet straps, buckle straps and cargo net to secure your load to the truck bed.

Pack each item tightly to minimise movement, and place the heavier items against the truck’s walls. If possible, use a friction mat to further enhance stability and prevent sliding.

What is the oldest age to drive a rental truck in Australia?

At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! We say that age is just a number. That’s why we allow senior drivers to rent a truck with us, to make moving or transporting cargo easier.

Can I rent a truck with a normal licence?

Yes, at Redspot, you can rent our 3.5 tonne trucks with a normal licence without any issues. To hire a Truck in Australia, you will need:

  • A valid credit card or debit card* or purchase order/prepaid voucher**.
  • A valid driver’s licence and the licence of any other drivers using the car. Licence not in English? Please present an official translation from your embassy or home nation’s traffic authority.
  • Does your licence show your current address? If not, please provide documented proof of address, such as a utility bill.
  • If you are not an Australian citizen, you must provide your passport

*Debit cards: Must have the customer’s name displayed, and the ability to make online payments e.g. Visa or Mastercard debit cards.

**Purchase order or prepaid vouchers: Customers must also supply a valid credit card or Visa/Mastercard debit card for any incidental expenses (extensions, fuel charges, etc.).

Are there height-restricted tunnels to avoid in Sydney?

Yes, there are several height-restricted tunnels and roads around Sydney. The most common tunnel clearance in Sydney is 4.3 – 4.6 m. Any vehicle over this amount may be prohibited from specific tunnels.

Our Hino 300 trucks are around 3.2 m in height, and the exact measures are always confirmed at pick-up. There will be advanced warning signs for any tunnels with a low clearance. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to assess and detour as necessary.

Do Redspot moving trucks have unlimited kms?

While most standard hire cars come with unlimited kms, at Redspot, we do impose a 130 km p/day limit on vans, trucks and utes, including in Sydney, to help us sustain the fleet. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.

For more info, please contact our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.

Is roadside assistance included for truck hires?

24/7 standard roadside assistance is included in the truck hire rental price, so you are never alone during unexpected mechanical breakdowns. You can upgrade to premium roadside assistance for a fee per day to cover you for car tyres, key lockouts, and some accommodation costs.

What are the excess km charges?

With Redspot, you get 130 km free per day. Any further travel may result in excess km charges, for $0.30 per excess kilometre + GST.
