Why rent a ute in Melbourne?

With a reliable Redspot ute, you can carry up to 1,240kg in a sturdy, fuel efficient vehicle that is easier to park and drive across Melbourne than a larger box truck. Whether you need an extra vehicle for a contract or you’re helping your family move house, the versatility of a ute may be just what you need.

Moving house

Take charge of your home move with a convenient self-drive ute hire. With a 24-hour hire minimum, you can control the schedule, rather than waiting on professional movers. Using a dual or single cab ute’s ample cargo space, and additional moving accessories, you can make your heavy lifting a breeze.

Where to hire a ute in Melbourne

You can easily pick up a Redspot ute away from our Coburg branch and avoid the busy streets of the airport or city. Our ute rentals have a minimum rental period of 24 hours and a streamlined hiring process to give you a hassle-free pick-up process.

What to know before you hire a Ute in Melbourne

Driving a ute for the first time can feel daunting, especially if you’re used to zipping around in a compact car. Don’t stress, you can drive a ute with a standard driver’s licence and only need to make a few safe adjustments:

Steering Wheel

Give yourself extra space

A ute is usually longer than a standard car, so allow extra room when turning corners, changing lanes or parking.

no see

Be aware of blind spots

Adjust your mirrors before you set off and always do an extra check before changing lanes or merging.

drivers licence

Bring your driver’s licence

Bring a valid driver’s licence and a credit card when collecting your ute hire. All rental vehicles require a credit card at pick-up for pre-authorisation. Planning to add extra drivers? Make sure they bring their valid driver’s licences too, so you can share the driving without any hassles.

Inspection

Inspect the ute

When picking up your vehicle, thoroughly inspect your rental ute and let our friendly team know about any existing issues. This helps you avoid potential charges later and ensures you’re heading off in a well-maintained vehicle with peace of mind.

u-turn

Hook turns

In Melbourne’s CBD and certain suburban areas, you may need to perform a hook turn from the left lane to avoid blocking trams.

route

Plan your route

Remember that utes are larger than regular cars and may not fit in all spaces. Plan your route ahead of time, check for tunnel restrictions and avoid tight areas or low clearances where possible.

toll road

Toll policy

At Redspot, we use our own toll tag. If you bring your own device, you may risk being charged twice. When you collect your vehicle, you can choose to prepay your toll charges by purchasing a toll waiver.

brakes

Get familiar

A ute may feel higher and bulkier than other vehicles, and the dashboard layout might be different. Take a few minutes to get comfortable before releasing the handbrake.

Can you hire a ute to go one way?

Yes, you can hire a ute one-way from many Redspot branches! However, not all branches keep utes in their fleet, so we only offer one-way hires from specific locations. With these locations, you can pick up in Coburg and drop off in Cairns, Townsville, Sydney and more.

Interstate one-way rentals:

  • You can book one-way ute hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.

Restricted state one-way rentals:

  • Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented.

For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or use our online form to discuss your ute hire options. We’d love to help you navigate your journey!

Can I book a long-term ute rental?
