Tips for first-time van drivers in the Sunshine Coast
Whether this is your first time in a van or you’re a seasoned driver, there are plenty of small details you must be aware of when driving. Here are some handy tips to help you transport your load more safely:

Driver’s licence
Bring a valid driver’s licence and a credit card when booking your rental van. At Redspot, a credit card is required at pick-up for pre-authorisation. If you plan to have additional drivers, make sure they bring their valid licences too. That way, you can share the driving duties with ease.

Distracted Drivers
From November 2025 onwards, Queensland has introduced a fine and demerit points for drivers caught drinking coffee or any other beverage while driving. This is because the activity is considered a distraction that can hamper driving ability and reaction time. Be sure to avoid eating, drinking or holding objects while driving in Queensland.

Check the fuel policy
Be sure to understand the fuel policy before collecting your van. With Redspot, you can choose from our pre-pay and refuelling services, or simply fill the tank yourself before returning the vehicle.

Van inspection
Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to inspect the van for any existing damage and report it straight away. This helps you avoid potential charges and keeps your hire costs down.

U-Turns
You can only perform a U-turn in Queensland when there is no sign prohibiting it. U-turns are also prohibited at traffic lights. You must also give way to all other vehicles, including bicycles, personal mobility devices and pedestrians. Be mindful of your vehicle’s larger size, and check your blind spots carefully.

Plan your route
Vans are larger, slower and take longer to stop than cars. Check your route in advance and steer clear of narrow streets, tight corners, or low-clearance zones.

Moving accessories
You can hire or buy moving accessories or specialised storage options to make your move as stress-free as possible. These are especially handy for transporting fragile items or appliances like glassware and fridges.

Toll policy
Many major roads across Australia, including in Queensland, operate as cashless toll roads. Redspot vehicles come fitted with a toll tag for your convenience. For added peace of mind, you can pre-pay tolls by purchasing a toll waiver when you collect your van.

Driving adjustments
Vans handle differently than cars, so take your time getting used to braking, turning and parking. A little extra caution will make your journey smoother and safer.
Van hire in Sunshine Coast FAQs
How much to hire a van on the Sunshine Coast?
The exact cost of hiring a van on the Sunshine Coast can vary depending on the model of your vehicle, how long you’re renting for, and your mileage.
Just enter all your rental details into our handy booking tool to get a cost estimate of your trip.
Is driving on the Sunshine Coast easy?
Driving is typically pretty easy on the Sunshine Coast, but some routes, like the Bruce Highway, can become heavily congested during peak hours. Popular drives like the Great Beach Drive may also be more appropriate for a 4WD or AWD vehicle.
How do I drive a van?
First time behind the wheel of a van? No dramas! We’ve got a few handy tips to help you hit the road with confidence and keep things running smoothly.
- Leave space: Take it easy and stay alert around other vehicles. Moving vans are a fair bit bigger than your average car, so you’ll need to leave extra space, especially when turning corners. Go wide and slow so you don’t clip anything, and make sure your cargo stays safe along the way.
- Secure your load: Before you set off, double-check that everything in the back is tied down properly. Loose items can slide around while you’re driving, which can throw the van off balance, especially when braking or taking turns.
- Use your indicators early: You’re in a bigger rig now, so it’s even more important to let others know what you’re up to. Flick your blinker on nice and early when turning or changing lanes, so other drivers have time to adjust.
- Keep the size and weight in mind: Moving vans are heavier and take longer to stop, so go easy on the pedal and allow extra braking distance. If you’re on a hill, use the handbrake when stopping to keep things steady and safe.
- Take regular breaks: Driving a larger vehicle can be more tiring than you might think. Pull over now and then to stretch your legs and recharge. And if the weather ever turns dodgy, don’t risk it. Find a safe spot and wait it out.
Can you hire a van to go one way?
With Redspot, yes, you can! Our flexible one-way packages let you pick up in one location and drop it off in another, letting you save time, fuel and money on the return trip.
Please keep in mind that one-way rentals usually come with a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be shown to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.
Are there height-restricted roads in the Sunshine Coast?
Yes, there are height-restricted roads in the Sunshine Coast, most commonly near bridges and similar structures. Our hired vans are both smaller than the 4.3 metre height restrictions, so you shouldn’t need to worry too much about bridges and other restricted roads.
How do I keep my items from moving around?
We recommend hiring our moving accessories to keep your items safely wrapped and packaged before you load them. That way, you can ensure they are protected while driving. Be sure you use any ratchet straps, cargo nets or buckle straps present in the vehicle.
When loading, pack each item tightly to minimise how much room your items have to move. Be sure to pack heavier items against the van’s walls.
Can I rent a van with a normal licence?
At Redspot, you can absolutely rent a van with a normal licence! We allow any class C licence holder to rent a truck or van with us.
What is the oldest age to drive a rental van in Australia?
At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! We say that age is just a number. That’s why we welcome senior drivers to rent with us and keep their adventures rolling.
Do Redspot vans have unlimited kms?
While most standard hire cars come with unlimited kms, Redspot does impose a 100km p/day limit on vans, trucks and utes to help us sustain the fleet. In remote locations such as Alice Springs or Darwin, we also have a 200km p/day limit to ensure our vehicles remain well-maintained and prepared for the unique demands of the Australian outback.
For more info, please contact our friendly team at 1300 668 810 (toll-free) to find the best fit for your plans.
What are the excess km charges?
With Redspot van hires, the first 130 km you drive is free every day. Any further travel may result in excess km charges.
Can Redspot vans move interstate?
Yes, depending on your location and plans! If you return your Redspot van to the same location you picked it up from, you’re free to roam the interstate with ease.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way van hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way van hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented from.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or fill out the online form to chat about your van hire options. We’re here to help you move, safe and sound.
