8-seater van driving tips
Whether it’s your first time behind the wheel of a people mover or you’re already comfortable with larger vehicles, it’s worth brushing up on a few key tips. Driving an 8-seater van is a bit different from your everyday sedan, but with a little preparation, it’s easy to get the hang of.
Some important tips to remember include:

Give yourself more space
An 8-seater van is heavier and longer than a standard car, so it needs more time to brake and turn. Always allow extra room between you and the vehicle in front, and take corners at a slower pace than usual.

Be mindful of your height
You’re driving a taller vehicle, which may not fit under some car parks, bridges, or drive-throughs. Check for height restrictions ahead of time to avoid any unexpected obstacles.

Familiarise yourself with the controls
Our passenger vans may be set up differently from what you’re used to. Take a few minutes to get comfortable with the controls and features before hitting the road.

Watch your blind spots
Larger vehicles tend to have bigger blind spots. Use your mirrors more often, and always double-check before changing lanes or reversing.

Handbrake positioning
The handbrake in an 8-seater minivan may be in a different position than you are used to. Be sure to double-check how to ensure the brake is fully up or down, and how far you may need to stretch.

Know your fuel policy
Make sure you understand how fuelling works for your hire. With Redspot, you can choose to pre-pay for fuel, return the van full, or use our refuelling service. We’ll accept whichever options suit you.

Plan your route
Take a moment to map out your journey before you leave. Knowing your route helps reduce stress, avoid tight streets or low-clearance roads, and makes for a smoother trip overall.

Understand your insurance options
Driving a larger vehicle comes with more responsibility, but you don’t need the extra stress. Redspot’s all-inclusive cover gives you peace of mind, so you can focus on the drive.

Consider your luggage needs
While 8-seater minibuses are great for transporting people, boot space can be limited if you’re carrying a full load of passengers. If you’re travelling with lots of luggage, you might need to pack strategically or consider a trailer or second vehicle.

8-seater van FAQ
Do you need a special license to drive an 8-passenger van in Australia?
In Australia, a standard car licence allows you to drive a minibus or minivan with up to 12 people. However, a standard car licence (Class C) has a restriction of up to 4.5 tonnes of gross vehicle mass (GVM), including the weight of passengers.
At Redspot, all our 8-seater vans and minibuses have a GVM under the maximum. Feel free to jump behind the wheel without breaking the scale.
If you are an International Driver, you should check the GVM restriction on your local standard car licence to ensure you can drive an 8-seater van.
Do I need a credit card to pick up a minivan hire?
No, you do not strictly need a credit card to pick up your van hire, as we also accept debit cards in the renter’s name. However, debit cards must be Visa or Mastercard, and you will need sufficient funds available on your card.
Is it hard to drive an 8 seater van in Sydney?
Driving an 8-seater in Sydney isn’t too hard, but you will need to be more aware due to the car’s bigger size, longer braking distance, height and blind spots. Be sure to check out our tips for driving an 8-seater, and don’t be afraid to use features like a reversing camera to make your drive easier.
Do seats go down in an 8-seater van?
Yes, in our Kia Carnival 8-seater vans (or similar), the seats can go down for more storage space. This includes the third and second rows of seats.
Are there places I can’t drive in Sydney?
There are no blanket bans for 8-seaters like a Kia Carnival in Sydney. However, very tight lanes and alleys may be challenging, but not illegal, to drive through.
How high is an 8-seater minivan?
Our 8-seater vans are typically around 1.78 metres in total height. This height may increase if you have additional attachments, such as LED lights or a roof rack.
Make sure you check the exact height before driving off the lot.
Does an 8-seater van include the driver?
Yes, a self-drive 8-seater van includes the driver in the head count.
What is the difference between a van and a minivan?
A van is typically a larger vehicle with a large cargo bay and 2-3 seats for passengers. They are mainly used to transport goods and carry cargo.
A minivan is a passenger vehicle designed to carry larger groups of 7-12 passengers, depending on the vehicle.
Can I hire an 8 seater for a one way trip?
Yes, with Redspot, you can take your 8-seater van on a one-way rental trip! Take advantage of Redspot’s flexible one-way packages and pick up your vehicle without having to worry about the return trip. This lets you save precious fuel, money and time on each trip.
Please be advised that one-way rentals typically come with a drop fee (also called a one-way fee). This helps us cover the cost of moving the vehicle back to its original branch. We’ll be sure to inform you of this fee during your online booking process, so you know what you are paying from the beginning.
Are 8-seater vans hard to drive?
If you are not familiar with driving an 8-seater minivan, it can feel a bit strange to drive. However, they are not too different from driving a standard car if you familiarise yourself ahead of time.
For instance, you should give yourself space for braking and manoeuvring to account for the heavier load in a van. Also, remember that the blind spot is larger, so ensure you use the mirrors more than you would with a regular car.
