What to know before you hire a van in Hobart
Whether this is your first time driving a van or you’re a professional delivery person, there are plenty of small details you should be aware of when driving a van. Here are some top tips to help you transport your cargo more safely:

Driver’s licence
Bring a valid driving licence and a credit card to book your rental van. At Redspot, we require a credit card at pick-up for a pre-authorisation. If you’re planning on additional drivers, please bring their valid driver’s licences along too. Then you can share driving duties with no sweat.

Check the fuel policy
Understand the moving van fuel policy before you pick it up. With Redspot, we have you covered with pre-pay and refuelling services, or you can fill up the tank yourself.

Van inspection
Before you take off, you should inspect the van for any existing damage and report it to avoid any potential charges and keep your hiring costs down.

U-Turns
You can only perform a U-turn in Queensland when there is no sign prohibiting it. U-turns are also prohibited at traffic lights. You must also give way to all other vehicles, including bicycles, personal mobility devices and pedestrians. Be mindful of your vehicle’s larger size, and check your blind spots carefully.

Plan your route
Vans are larger, slower and harder to stop. Check your route ahead of time and avoid any tight spots or low clearance zones on your path.

Moving accessories
Hire or purchase moving accessories or specialised storage options to make moving as stress-free as possible! This is especially helpful for transporting fragile items and appliances, like glassware and fridges.

Toll policy
Tasmania has many winding roads and wild animals crossing the road, especially at dawn and dusk. Keep a lookout for animal warning signs and signs marking bends and winds. Slow down and cover your brakes where applicable.

Driving adjustments
Most vans handle differently than cars, so take your time getting used to braking, turning and parking for a safer, smoother journey.
Van hire in Hobart FAQs
How much to hire a van in Hobart?
The precise cost of hiring a van in Hobart can change depending on the model of your vehicle, how long you’re renting for and your mileage.
To see the cost of your van hire, just enter all your rental details into our handy booking tool, and we’ll give you a complete cost estimate of your rental.
Is it easy to drive in Hobart?
It’s typically easier to drive in Hobart because it’s a smaller city with less traffic and congestion than a large mainland city. However, like most of Tasmania, Hobart has narrow, winding roads, especially outside of the city centre. You must also be aware of wildlife like kangaroos outside of the city.
How do I drive a moving van?
First time behind the wheel of a moving van? No dramas! We’ve got a few handy tips to help you hit the road with confidence and keep things running smoothly.
- Leave space: Take it easy and stay alert around other vehicles. Moving vans are a fair bit bigger than your average car, so you’ll need to leave extra space, especially when turning corners. Go wide and slow, so you don’t clip anything, and make sure your cargo stays safe along the way.
- Secure your load: Before you set off, double-check that everything in the back is tied down properly. Loose items can slide around while you’re driving, which can throw the van off balance, especially when braking or taking turns.
- Use your indicators early: You’re in a bigger rig now, so it’s even more important to let others know what you’re up to. Flick your blinker on nice and early when turning or changing lanes, so other drivers have time to adjust.
- Keep the size and weight in mind: Moving vans are heavier and take longer to stop, so go easy on the pedal and allow extra braking distance. If you’re on a hill, use the handbrake when stopping to keep things steady and safe.
- Take regular breaks: Driving a larger vehicle can be more tiring than you might think. Pull over now and then to stretch your legs and recharge. And if the weather ever turns dodgy, don’t risk it. Find a safe spot and wait it out.
Can you hire a van to go one way?
With Redspot, yes, you can! Our flexible one-way packages let you pick up in one location and drop it off in another, letting you save time, fuel and money on the return trip.
Please keep in mind that one-way rentals usually come with a drop fee (aka one-way fees) to cover the cost of moving the vehicles back to their original branch. This fee amount will be shown to you during the online booking process, so you know what you are paying for from day 1 and can easily compare prices.
Are there places I can’t drive in Hobart?
Yes, some roads in Hobart may be seasonally closed for safety, such as Pinnacle Road on Mt Wellington, due to snow or ice. Tasmanian road rules also prohibit parking on or across driveways, even if it is your own vehicle.
Are there height restriction roads in Hobart?
Yes, there are height restrictions in Hobart, often for bridges, underpasses and other overhead structures. Typically, the legal maximum height restriction is 4.3 meters.
Both our 1-tonne and 1.5-tonne vans fall under 3-4 meters, so you shouldn’t need to worry too much about height restrictions in Hobart.
How do I keep my items from moving around?
We recommend hiring our moving accessories to keep your items safely wrapped and packaged before you load them. That way, you can ensure they are protected while driving. Be sure you use any ratchet straps, cargo nets or buckle straps present in the vehicle.
When loading, pack each item tightly to minimise how much room your items have to move. Be sure to pack heavier items against the van’s walls.
Can I rent a van with a normal licence?
At Redspot, you can absolutely rent a van with a normal licence! We allow any class C licence holder to rent a truck or van with us.
What is the oldest age to drive a rental van in Australia?
At Redspot, there’s no maximum age limit! We say that age is just a number. That’s why we welcome senior drivers to rent with us and keep their adventures rolling.
Can Redspot vans move interstate?
Yes, depending on your location and plans! If you return your Redspot van to the same location you picked it up from, you’re free to roam the interstate with ease.
Interstate one-way rentals:
- You can book one-way van hire between our East Coast branches (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC), subject to vehicle availability.
Restricted state one-way rentals:
- Due to the remoteness of certain branches (NT, SA, WA), one-way van hire is only available between Redspot branches within the state/territory from which it is rented from.
- Tasmania collections can only one-way to other Tasmanian branches.
For more info, contact our friendly team on 1300 668 810 or fill out the online form to chat about your van hire options. We’re here to help you move, safe and sound.
Do Redspot vans have unlimited kms?
